Yesterday, our youth ran the whole show, including the music, the sermon, and everything in between! We confirmed 5 of our youth (Cole, Chelsea, Eleanor, Gerald, and Mika) and sent our graduating seniors (Luke & Louey) off in style with personalized Senior Quilts! Both of our seniors will attend the University of Oregon in the fall.

Big thanks go out to our fabulous youth, Blake for leading them so well, and especially Erin, Vonda, and all of Tabitha Circle for the beautiful quilts.

This morning, we conclude our "Open Hands" worship series. We are invited to relinquish our need to manage results: in ministry, justice, relationships, even our own healing, and to trust that God is at work beyond what we can see.

The livestream will start at 10:20am (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hr73H0SRrPA). Worship will begin at 10:30am.

A Word With the Pastor: Some New Delight

Much to the chagrin of the rest of the household, our house is ready for new furniture. We have sofa shopped for two years, never quite finding the perfect fit. We weren’t in a hurry, as the existing couch was… fine. Despite its shredded upholstery far from the possibility of patching, the couch had plenty of cushion.

This Sunday, May 17th, First Church will host the Ecumentical Ministries of Oregon Earth Summit. As usual, the event will focus on ideas for taking better care of God’s creation. But this year, following the theme of “Re-Connect, Re-Imagine, Re-New,” there will also be an opportunity to contribute to a statewide, earth-themed art project. Participants will design 8.5x8.5 paper squares that will be gathered photographically and electronically into a massive “community quilt.” Ideas for square design will be provided, but feel free to bring your own creativity—the sky’s the limit!

Activities at the First Church hub will begin after worship at noon. A lunch of vegetarian chili and fixings will be provided, and there will be an opportunity for conversation and connection before the statewide event kicks off at 1pm.

Anyone who can’t gather at the hub in the Fireside Room can join the Summit at one of the other hubs around the state or log in from the comfort of their home at 1pm.

In either case, more information, a list of hubs and a link to registration for the event can be found at emoregon.org/event/2026-earth-summit. We hope you can join us in person or online!

Help beautify the church grounds! 🪏

This Saturday, May 16, join our Shovel & Rake team for the spring All Church Workday. We will be weeding, trimming, and otherwise spiffing up our garden and grounds before sharing a light lunch around Noon.

Please bring a pair of work gloves if you have them (don’t worry, we have extras) 🧤

We hope to see you there!

This Sunday, May 10, Rev. Karyn Richards-Kuan will preach on “Letting Go of Perfection,” confronting the exhausting illusion that we must be flawless to be faithful, or that only the perfect can be pursued. The gospel invites us instead into honest, surrendered living, trusting that God brings life not from our polished image or perfect process, but from our offered selves.

The livestream will start at 10:20am, and worship will begin at 10:30am.

A Word with the Pastor: For the Women

There are so many women on whose shoulders we all stand: champions of justice & faith, stewards of our stories & our souls. For the women who have raised us up in the faith, [...] I give tremendous thanks!

This week we not only celebrate those who have been mothering nurturers in our lives, but also celebrate the 70th anniversary of clergywomen achieving full rights in the Methodist Church.
