The Rev. Matthew Smith, pastor of Cedarville and Warren United Methodist churches in the Northern Illinois Conference, recently returned from a renewal leave. One question he was asked is, “Was it a nice vacation?” He writes that while he found moments of rest and joy, renewal leave is much deeper than a vacation. “It is intentional time set aside to reconnect with God, renew one’s calling and return to ministry with fresh spiritual, emotional and intellectual strength.”

The congregation of Montavilla United Methodist is excited to be tearing down its old, deteriorating building, and replacing it with Las Nuevas Rosas, an affordable housing apartment complex. The complex will include a new space on the first floor for the church to worship and do ministry. Work is scheduled to begin in 2028. The church is known for its work with people experiencing homelessness.

Connecting Neighbors, a hands-on disaster preparedness training, will be held September 19, 8:30am-4:15pm at Beaverton First UMC (add 4:30-5:30pm for Ambassador training). The faith-based curriculum equips churches and volunteers to prepare individuals, protect church property, and organize disaster response ministries. Free, with donations accepted for lunch.

Retired Bishop Albert Frederick “Fritz” Mutti III, who led United Methodists in Kansas from 1992 to 2004, died Sept. 1 at age 88. Alongside his late wife, he advocated for LGBTQ inclusion and helped establish the United Methodist Global AIDS Committee and Fund. The couple’s tireless advocacy came out of the great personal loss of two sons to AIDS.
