So, the news is all about the fires in Oregon and Washington and BC followed by high temperature advisories and smoke. So I step out on to the front porch to feed the cat. Temperature is 59 degrees blue skies and white puffy clouds drifting on a salty breeze.

My wife and I use to have a ministry in a Nursing Home . While part of the team ministered to the ambulatory and the wheel chair division, I would make the rounds that were confined to their beds. There was this one lady who was curled into a fetal position that the staff pretty much ignored. Her name was Ayda, was 92 and had suffered a stroke. What caught my attention was that Ayda was crying. After talking to the staff, I learned that after the stroke the family stop coming and her only interaction with anyone was when the team came to change her diaper and bedding. So, the first thing I did was take her hand and held it while I prayed for her. I then had one of the staff get my wife and had her sing for her and to her while I held her hand. And Ayda, she began to hum. Well the staff was shooing us out and I told Ayda I would be back to read to her the next day. HOWEVER, my Father in heaven had other plans and came that night to take her home. Which was fine because His daughter would get a new body and be able to sing and dance. Sigh, ---

Once upon a time, when I was just a lad of 10 years old, I was a cub scout. Our den would participate in some community activity of one sort or another. That year we challenged with the task of providing Christmas presents to the residents of a county nursing home. We were assigned one of the residents. My guy was was a double amputee in his 80s named Jon. He had no family. My gift to him was an Old Spice gift box that had a mug of shaving soap with brush a razor and a bar of bath soap on a rope wrapped with a card and a bag of little candy canes. When the day arrived I went to Jon and gave him his present and wished him a merry Christmas. He thanked me and then opened his gift and burst into tears. Then he motioned for me to come closer and he hugged me.
A couple of days later while walking home from school, I was passing by the nursing home and there was Jon sitting in his wheelchair and so I went over and said Hi. This became a ritual of sorts and John and I were becoming friends. One day he wasn't there and I went inside to check on him and was told that he had died in his sleep.
This was my first experience with death but I didn't cry because I knew that Jon was in heaven and that we would meet again. EVEN though I wasn't an Official Christian ====I KNEW.
