UU Animal Ministry PDX Promoting awareness of how human culture affects our physical and spiritual health, and the welfare

The UUAM in Portland, Oregon is an organization within the First Unitarian Church of Portland that strives to heighten the awareness of and respect for animals by identifying animal suffering and seeking ways to alleviate it. We work to raise our collective consciousness regarding human animal attitudes toward non human animals, and to promote greater compassion and ways to lessen animal oppressio

n. We seek to find ways to shift from the dominant world view of objectifying non human animals, and accomplish these aims through education and outreach, supporting legislation, committing our time and resources to advocate on animals' behalf, and reducing animal exploitation and agony in accordance with our 7th principle:

"Respect for the interdependent web of existence of which we are a part." Projects we are working on include:

Speakers and films about animal welfare
Preparing plant based meals & showcasing vegan food alternatives at church events
Letter writing campaigns regarding animal issues of oppression
Field trips to area animal sanctuaries, education and service
Information table after church services
Offering community for folks who choose a vegan lifestyle and their loved ones
Providing support for those grieving the loss or illness of a companion animal
Raising funds to buy food for animal companions of houseless people
Promoting sermons related to animal issues
Encouraging UU's and others to adopt a sustainable lifestyle focusing on:

Consuming a plant based diet
Using cruelty-free products
Choosing alternatives that do not support the use of animals in research

Its been years since we watched this film. It is often overlooked. Though it touches on animal welfare, environmentalism and health, it really digs into the ethical argument that is human exceptionalism. Free to watch, worth a watch.

Watch the film on your own then join us for rounds of small group discussion and a special guest Q&A!

A press release on Monday from SAEN described the Armstead research papers that have been retracted as “gruesome, multimillion dollar tax-funded experiments”. It said that the research had “inflicted traumatic head injuries on dozens of newborn piglets”.

Absolutely horrific.

Oversight review into US research on newborn piglets led by Prof William Armstead, which has been called ‘utterly reprehensible’

“How do you evaluate those risks with an endangered species? Do you take any risks? And do you take risks for her life?” Vinick asks. “Those are the issues we are dealing with I think for the first time ever in her life.”

"The existence of the octopus makes you think differently, not just about eating and farming animals, but our relationship to them, our assumptions about them, and what this all says about us, the humans, languishing so pridefully on our animal kingdom throne."

Octopuses are smart, playful and emotional in ways humans haven’t begun to understand until recently – just as companies are about to farm more of them than ever for food

Mr Candy is also switching to "veganic production", which prohibits the use of manure, or any other animal product, to improve the soil. For this, he is working with a body called International Biocyclic Vegan Network, which promotes and certifies plant-based, organic farms around the world.

"It allows for two years to transition out of a livestock enterprise and establish suitable alternatives," he says. "This approach enables the farmer to have a suitable timescale to develop their business plans, without a financial impact."

Due to animal welfare and environment concerns, some farms are converting to vegan production.

"Two condors were reintroduced to the forests of Northern California on Tuesday, as part of a joint effort by the Yurok Tribe and Redwoods National and State Parks. Tiana Williams-Claussen, a Yurok tribal biologist, explained the significance of the reintroduction of the condor, known as Prey-go-neesh, to the region in an essay this spring for Living Bird magazine."

Industry standard: "Animals are killed on-farm for many reasons, not just disease control, for example due to illness or serious injury. More than 170 million chickens, pigs and cows die or are killed on-farm every year in the US, according to estimates from the National Agricultural Statistics Service."

"This is an important oversight. The COVID-19 pandemic is a reminder that human and non-human health and welfare are linked. Practices that undermine animals’ well being have negative consequences for humans, too. While we might not know how the novel coronavirus originated, we do know that habitat destruction, industrial livestock farming, and wildlife trade and use contribute to the emergence of infectious disease."

The 2019 UN Global Sustainable Development Report identified animal welfare as one of several key missing issues in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its SDGs. Ahead of UNEA 5.2, seven countries from Africa and South Asia have tabled a draft resolution that calls on countries to protec...
