This week is Fleet Week, and today we had the privilege of welcoming incredible men and women from the U.S. Navy who came to serve alongside us here in Portland.

Our volunteers spent the day sorting clothing, packing backpacks with clothing items and hygiene kits for our guests, and serving a meal downtown to those experiencing homelessness. It was a meaningful day of service and community care.

We are deeply grateful for their service to our country and their willingness to serve our neighbors here in Portland. Volunteers like these help make our work possible.

🍽️ Food Service Assistant
Help prepare and serve meals while creating a welcoming environment for residents, guests, and volunteers. This hands on role supports daily kitchen operations, special events, and resident development, providing opportunities to encourage and serve people as they rebuild their lives.

🤝 Men's LifeChange Program Coordinator (Bilingual English/Spanish)
Use your gifts in mentorship, discipleship, and leadership to walk alongside men pursuing recovery and life transformation. This role works closely with both English and Spanish speaking residents, helping ensure every participant receives the support, guidance, and encouragement needed to grow in their faith and build a foundation for lasting change.

Fresh paint. Fresh hope. 🎨

This week, District Painting Company and Rodda-Miller Paint Pro are helping transform the 4th floor our building in Old Town as we prepare to launch Transformational Housing this summer.

Thanks to Pete and his crew for donating their time, labor, and supplies to help create a space where men rebuilding their lives can find stability, community, and hope.

Kylia never expected to need a shelter. After losing her job and housing, she found herself moving between motels before coming to our overnight shelter last November. What she found was more than just a place to sleep. It was safety, warmth, and stability during one of the hardest seasons of her life.

“Even though it wasn’t ideal, I knew I would be safe and warm every night.”

Our overnight shelter, located at Portland Central Nazarene Church in partnership with Agape Village, provides year-round shelter for up to 100 individuals each night. Guests have access to a safe place to rest, warmth from the elements, and connection to resources that can help them move toward stability and housing.

Kylia’s story is an important reminder that homelessness can happen to anyone. A lost job, rising housing costs, or unexpected hardship can quickly leave someone without a safe place to stay. Overnight shelters provide more than beds. They offer dignity, rest, and hope for what comes next. ❤️

Did you know Union Gospel Mission serves far beyond downtown Portland?

Our Search + Rescue teams go throughout the metro area to meet people where they are, bringing hygiene kits, food, water, clothing, and other essential items to those experiencing homelessness and hardship.

But outreach is about more than meeting immediate needs.

We help individuals obtain IDs, connect to resources, and begin building a path toward stability, housing, and life change. Through a consistent presence and genuine relationships, we walk alongside people with hope, dignity, and care.
