Our voluntaries this Sunday honor two 19th-century composers. Hedwige Chrétien (1859-1944) was a French composer and teacher at the Paris Conservatoire, where she taught harmony and solfège and wrote works. Elizabeth Stirling (1819-1895) was an English organist and composer who broke new ground for women. She composed anthems, hymn tunes, and organ works, and in 1856 completed requirements for a Bachelor of Music degree from Oxford University, but was denied the degree because she was a woman.

This Sunday’s voluntaries feature works by two remarkable women composers of the 18th century. Maria Theresia von Paradis (1759–1824), a blind Viennese pianist and composer, became one of the most celebrated musicians of her time, admired by Mozart and Salieri. Anna Bon (1738–1767), born into a family of musicians, composed sonatas in her teens that were published and performed across Europe, reflecting the elegant early Classical style.

For this Sunday’s Choral Morning Prayer, we feature canticles by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875–1912). This Black composer was a monumental figure in British music. He achieved international stardom with his cantata Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast. Unlike some of his more overtly Afro-British works, the Te Deum and Jubilate in F, showcase his refined approach to Anglican choral traditions. They are celebrated for bringing a fresh, modern energy to the standard church liturgy of the late Victorian era.
