For this Sunday’s Choral Morning Prayer, we feature canticles by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875–1912). This Black composer was a monumental figure in British music. He achieved international stardom with his cantata Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast. Unlike some of his more overtly Afro-British works, the Te Deum and Jubilate in F, showcase his refined approach to Anglican choral traditions. They are celebrated for bringing a fresh, modern energy to the standard church liturgy of the late Victorian era.

Stephanie Martin’s anthem, Hear My Prayer, is a setting of Psalm 102 that musically illustrates a journey from anguished plea to a resolute assurance. Composed in 2009, she employs more chromaticism and harmonic complexity than in her Four Motets, which we have heard in the preceding weeks. The organ voluntaries are in celebration of J.S. Bach’s 341st birthday. Special guest organist, Mina-Marie Jelinek, Assistant Organist at Washington National Cathedral, will play this Sunday’s postlude.

Organist and composer Angela Kraft Cross presents the world premiere of her new Organ Symphonie — a vivid and expressive work. The program also features selections from the French Romantic repertoire. Immediately following, experience the tranquil beauty of Choral Evensong with St. Luke’s Choir, with works by Stephanie Martin and Anthony Piccolo. Blending modern expressiveness with the timeless grace, this service invites all into a moment of quiet reflection and spiritual renewal.

This Lenten season our choir is undertaking a choral study of the music of Canadian composer Stephanie Martin, featuring one of her works each Sunday for the anthem. Martin is an award winning composer and conductor, and is associate professor of music at York University, the director of Schola Magdalena (a women’s ensemble for chant, medieval and modern polyphony), conductor emeritus of Pax Christi Chorale, and past director of music at the historic church of Saint Mary Magdalene in Toronto.

Join us this Wednesday 2/18 at noon for Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the penitential season of Lent, a time of spiritual preparation for Easter. We gather on this day to receive ashes as a reminder of our mortality, and to pray the Litany of Penitence. The choir will sing Gregorio Allegri's moving setting of Psalm 51, Miserere mei, Deus.
