Today, as a descendant of white European immigrants who arrived in N. America in 1615, 1620 and then in 16 succeeding generations, I want to acknowledge the role my families and ancestors played in the settling of the Americas. I am proud to be an American, but, at the same time, I also feel remorse and profound regret for harm done, mistakes made, violence committed and for justice denied. I can not undo the harm or change the past, but I do pledge to give my heart and my loyalty to a country which respects the dignity of every human being and the inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness we all believe in.

Today we observe Indigenous Peoples' Day here in the US. It is a holiday which celebrates and honors Indigenous American peoples and commemorates their histories and cultures. It is celebrated across much of the US on the 2nd Monday in October. To all who observe, may we have the blessings of peace and prosperity for which all of our ancestors sought, fought, lived and died.
