A Name That Leads Us to the Rock
September 12 — Optional Memorial of the Most Holy Name of Mary
Readings: 1 Corinthians 10:14–22; Psalm 116; Luke 6:43–49
A name can carry love, memory, and a sense of someone’s presence. For Christians, the name of Mary is a word of hope because it recalls the woman chosen to become the Mother of our Savior. We speak her name with affection and confidence, asking for the intercession of the mother whom Jesus has given to his Church.
Yet today’s Gospel reminds us that holy words must become holy lives. Jesus asks, “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ but not do what I command?” Saying the right name or professing the right belief is not enough. A strong spiritual life is built by coming to Christ, listening to his word, and acting upon it.
Mary’s entire life follows this pattern. She listens to God, receives his word, and allows that word to shape her decisions. She does not merely call upon the Lord; she entrusts herself to his will. Her life bears the good fruit of obedient faith, and that fruit is centered entirely upon Jesus Christ.
Saint Paul gives this obedience a Eucharistic dimension. The cup we bless is participation in Christ’s Blood, and the bread we break is participation in his Body. Because we share the one Bread, we become one Body. This communion calls for an undivided heart. We cannot receive Christ at his table while building our lives upon pride, resentment, false worship, or comfortable disobedience.
Devotion to Mary is therefore not a substitute for following Jesus. Authentic Marian devotion always leads us to him and teaches us to build upon the rock of his word.
Today, we might speak Mary’s name in a simple prayer and ask her intercession concerning one command of Christ that we find difficult. Then let us take one concrete step of obedience: forgive, tell the truth, serve someone quietly, or abandon a sinful habit. The foundation is strengthened whenever the word of Jesus becomes action.
In the Eucharist, Christ, our rock, gives us the one Bread that makes us one Body. Through Mary’s intercession, may our hearts become good soil, our lives bear holy fruit, and our faith remain firm when the floods come.
