New World screwworm has been detected in South Texas.
Human cases are rare, but residents should take precautions:
• Check pets and livestock for wounds.
• Clean and cover open wounds.
• Call a doctor or veterinarian immediately if larvae are seen in a wound.
• Keep pets indoors or supervised when recovering from injuries or surgical procedures.
