What makes a cool roof? Cool roofs are created when a reflective surface is added to a rooftop. They similarly reduce the amount of energy required to cool a building. The lighter-color surface of a cool roof reflects heat rather than absorbing it, like its darker counterparts, acting to reduce the internal temperature of the building by up to 30 percent and requiring less energy to keep the building cool and comfortable. Both green and cool rooftops in urban environments can also help reduce the urban heat island effect.
