The Son of Man is on a mission to resist the powers, human and otherwise, that foment injustice and tolerate brokenness. Along the way, heโ€™s betrayed, arrested, tried by Roman and Jewish authorities, beaten, and crucified. To add insult to injury, one of his closest disciples denies knowing him at all.

To be honest, it all makes me uncomfortable, to say the least, mainly because if you so much as back me into a corner, my inclination is to do whatever it takes to defend myself.

๐๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐š๐ญโ€™๐ฌ ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐ฐ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐‰๐ž๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ž๐ฌ.

He heals the ear of his oppressor, he carries his own cross obediently to his death, and uses his dying breaths to pray, โ€œ๐™๐™–๐™ฉ๐™๐™š๐™ง, ๐™›๐™ค๐™ง๐™œ๐™ž๐™ซ๐™š ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š๐™ข, ๐™›๐™ค๐™ง ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š๐™ฎ ๐™ ๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ฌ ๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ฉ ๐™ฌ๐™๐™–๐™ฉ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š๐™ฎ ๐™–๐™ง๐™š ๐™™๐™ค๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ.โ€

That is really good news. I need to be reminded that so much of what wounds us is done without full understanding, and I know that I have moved through the lives of others with the same kind of blindness. In that prayer from the cross, there is room for all of it to be met with mercy.

Most of us know how the story ends, but we miss the journey.

The Maundy Thursday Service invites us to slow down and walk through the story before we celebrate the ending. The Last Supper shared between friends. The agony of a garden prayer. The weight of the cross. The darkness of the tomb. These aren't detours on the way to Easter morning โ€” they are the journey. And when you arrive at the resurrection having traveled that journey, it will mean something it never has before.

Don't skip to the ending. The whole story is worth it.
