Songs for the Road: Community
Psalm 133

This Sunday we continue our summer sermon series titled "Songs for the Road," that is a 15-week journey through the Psalms of Ascents (Psalms 120-134). These were the songs the people of God recited while making their way up to the city of Jerusalem for the annual pilgrim festivals, and they continue to give voice to the pilgrim journey of Christ followers today. This week we will consider Psalm 133. It is a Psalm that draws attention to the virtue of unity among the people of God, using some ancient imagery to emphasize that point. We will consider how living in this kind of community can be a challenge in today's culture, but one worth pursuing as the Church of Christ.

Songs for the Road: Obedience
Psalm 132

As we continue our Songs for the Road summer series, we come to the longest of the Psalms of Ascents—Psalm 132.

This Psalm invites us to look back at David’s obedience and remember the promises of the LORD. It reminds us that our journey of faith is shaped by both where God has brought us from and where He is leading us.

But obedience isn’t simply about following a list of rules. True obedience grows out of a deep relationship with God. When we know the One who calls us, our obedience becomes an expression of trust, love, and faith.

Listen to or watch Sunday’s sermon, Songs for the Road: Obedience, and continue the journey with us through the Psalms of Ascents.

Songs for the Road: Humility
Psalm 131

This Sunday we continue our summer sermon series titled "Songs for the Road," that is a 15-week journey through the Psalms of Ascents (Psalms 120-134). These were the songs the people of God recited while making their way up to the city of Jerusalem for the annual pilgrim festivals, and they continue to give voice to the pilgrim journey of Christ followers today. This week we will consider Psalm 131 that offers a word on humility - offering a description of what humility is not and then a picture of what humility looks like. We will explore both while asking what it looks like to live with a posture of humility today.

When we find ourselves waiting in the depths, what we desperately need is hope in order to carry on. What do we mean when we speak of hope? And what makes Christian hope unique?

A song of ascents.
1 Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord;
2 Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
to my cry for mercy.

3 If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,
Lord, who could stand?
4 But with you there is forgiveness,
so that we can, with reverence, serve you.

5 I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits,
and in his word I put my hope.
6 I wait for the Lord
more than watchmen wait for the morning,
more than watchmen wait for the morning.

7 Israel, put your hope in the Lord,
for with the Lord is unfailing love
and with him is full redemption.
8 He himself will redeem Israel
from all their sins.

Songs for the Road: Hope
Psalm 130

This Sunday we continue our summer sermon series titled "Songs for the Road" that is a 15-week journey through the Psalms of Ascents (Psalms 120-134). These were the songs the people of God recited while making their way up to the city of Jerusalem for the annual pilgrim festivals, and they continue to give voice to the pilgrim journey of Christ followers today. This week we will consider the familiar words of Psalm 130 that offer a word on sin and suffering — described by the Psalmist as life "in the depths." When we find ourselves waiting in the depths, what we desperately need is hope in order to carry on. This week we will explore this idea of hope. What do we mean when we speak of hope? And what makes Christian hope unique?

Songs for the Road: Perseverance
Psalm 129

This Sunday we continue our summer sermon series titled "Songs for the Road" that is a 15-week journey through the Psalms of Ascents (Psalms 120-134). These were the songs the people of God recited while making their way up to the city of Jerusalem for the annual pilgrim festivals, and they continue to give voice to the pilgrim journey of Christ followers today. This week we will consider the difficult words of Psalm 129 that name the people's oppression and pray for God's vengeance. Too often we think perseverance is about just putting your head down and grinding forward, but this Psalm seems to offer an alternative. Join us as we explore what this alternative might be.
