Catholics are called to leave behind “all passivity and indifference” toward current events and the lives of others, especially amid the “rapid and profound changes we are experiencing today,” Pope Leo XIV said at his Sept. 2 weekly general audience.

“We cannot remain as unengaged spectators; rather, we must listen with our hearts, allow ourselves to be challenged and become involved,” the pope said.

His reflection was part of a new series of reflections on the Second Vatican Council’s pastoral constitution “Gaudium et Spes," which examines the relationship between the Church and the modern world.

At his audience on Aug. 26, Pope Leo concluded his series of talks on the Vatican II document ‘Sacrosanctum Concilium,' during which he described the liturgy as “a living entity."

“The faithful ‘cannot and must no longer remain silent and passive. Their physical presence cannot be reconciled with their spiritual absence,’” he said, quoting Cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini of Milan, the future Pope Paul VI and saint.

“Firmly rooted” in the Church’s living tradition, the liturgical reform put forth by the Second Vatican Council grew from the need for the faithful to celebrate the liturgy more “consciously and actively,” and not “as strangers and silent spectators,” Pope Leo XIV said.

The bishops of Missouri are encouraging the faithful to consider Amendment 5 based on Catholic social teaching principles in their recent statement.

Amendment 5, which will appear on the Aug. 4 ballot, would phase out the individual state income tax based on revenue growth and authorize the expansion of sales and use taxes.

The U.S. bishops’ pastoral letter “Economic Justice for All” says tax systems should be evaluated by their impact on the poor, ensuring that those with greater resources bear a proportionately greater share of the public burden.

“For this reason, tax systems that rely heavily on regressive forms of taxation, such as sales taxes, should be approached with prudence because they can place a disproportionate burden on those with lower income,” the bishops said.

Ultimately, the bishops encouraged faithful to carefully discern their decision on this amendment, keeping the needs of the poor and vulnerable in mind.
