Sephardic Bikur Holim Congregation

Sephardic Bikur Holim Congregation A vibrant Sephardic Congregation- Celebrating 112 years of service to the Seattle Jewish Community

Sephardic Bikur Holim (SBH) Congregation is a Sephardic congregation of 320 families in Seattle, Washington. The Spiritual leader of SBH is Rabbi Ben Hassan and the Hazzan is Rabbi Frank Varon. Established more than 100 years ago by Levantine Jews from western Turkey, SBH has maintained a proud and distinct set of minhagim, cultural standards and meaningful values that reflect the joyous and livel

y approach to living a life that is distinctively and deeply Jewish and yet still accepting and connected to the world around us. Like many Sephardic congregations in North America, the member community of SBH is religiously diverse – made up of families who are shomer mitzvot, kashrut and Shabbat; families who are “traditional” but not fully observant; families who have more of a cultural affiliation; identify as Jewish and participate in annual Jewish rituals and milestones (Passover, Hannukah, etc.); and families who are on the periphery of the Jewish community. The one thread that ties all of these families together is that when they choose to attend religious services, they will attend them at SBH. Accordingly, SBH is an inclusive congregation, one that does not close its parking lot on Shabbat and Yom Tov, one that does not create fissures within its own community, but one that seeks opportunities to bring the members of its community together. Sephardic Bikur Holim maintains deep connection to our heritage manifested ritually through hazzanut, the knowledge and practice of its liturgy, which is unique even among Sephardic congregations. Culturally SBH is connected through language (Ladino), its foods, its love of family and its deep respect for the idea of tradition itself.

Insights on Shavuot, from Mr. Al Maimon, SBH Past President and student of Sephardic tradition and history.
As Al mentions above, at SBH, we will celebrate Shavuot by reciting the Ketubah de la Ley, a unique poetic composition that expresses our loving sentiments regarding receiving of the Torah. This poem is traditionally sung on the first day of Shavuot to honor the receiving of the Torah at Mount Sinai.

This rendition of the Ketubah de la Ley was performed by Al’s father, Bension Shalom Maimon A”H.

The parents of Al Maimon, Esther Normand and Vicky Schain, Bension Maimon and his wife, Lucy A"H, were pillars of our Seattle Sephardic community. Here is a wonderful article honoring their legacy. May their memories be a blessing.

Please join us for a special Kiddush this Shabbat, May 23rd in honor of Gabbai Larry Almo’s birthday, catered by Robert Gladstein.

Gabbai Larry Almo has been the Gabbai of SBH for over 37 years! With a kind heart and love for our SBH community, he facilitates the sale of mitzvot, organizing daily minyanim. His remarkable devotion for our Synagogue is truly inspiring and we are deeply grateful for his friendship and dedication to SBH.

Wishing Gabbai Larry and Lysa Almo a happy and healthy year ahead full of blessings! Para Muchos Anos.
