The Catholic Church celebrated the XI World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation on Sept. 1, with Pope Leo XIV inviting Catholics to reflect on the theme, “They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks” (Isaiah 2:4).

The annual observance, established by Pope Francis in 2015, marks the beginning of the Season of Creation, an ecumenical period observed from Sept. 1 through Oct. 4, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. In his 2026 message, Pope Leo focuses on the link between armed conflict and environmental degradation, noting that war harms not only people and communities but also creation, contributing to poverty, inequality and further conflict.

Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama presented the inaugural, diocesan People of Life Award to Rich Carberry Aug. 25 at the Catholic Center.

Carberry, 88, is a parishioner at St. Bernadette Church in Fuquay-Varina and was nominated because of his decades-long, unwavering consistency in supporting the dignity of human life.

Father Robert “Bob” Kus, a priest of the Diocese of Raleigh whose vocation combined parish ministry, missionary service, teaching, and nursing, died Aug. 28. He was 83.

Born March 30, 1943, in Cleveland, Father Kus first felt called to the priesthood as a child. He attended a Maryknoll high school seminary, where he developed a lifelong love of missions and a foundation for writing.

St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Tarboro took a significant step toward its future Aug. 2 as nearly 300 parishioners gathered to celebrate the first Mass on the site of the parish's future home.

The celebration began with a Eucharistic procession from the current church to the newly acquired property. Upon arriving, the faithful gathered for adoration before processing around the land, praying for God's blessing on the site and the generations who will worship there.

As the Church prepares for the beatification of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen on Sept. 24, 2026, at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis, Catholics across the country are reflecting on the life and legacy of one of the most influential Catholic communicators of the 20th century.

The Diocese of Raleigh has its own connection to Archbishop Sheen.

On Dec. 8, 1974, he served as homilist for the Diocese of Raleigh’s 50th Anniversary Mass. The celebration, held at Dorton Arena because Sacred Heart [then] Cathedral was too small to accommodate the expected crowd, had been planned as a joyful golden jubilee observance for the diocese.
