Want to learn how to phone bank in a comfortable setting? Do you already know how to and want another way to reach out?

Tomorrow night, a MICAH rep will come to Shady Grove and show us how to work phone banks. Then we'll spend the remaining time practicing and reaching out to Memphians!

MICAH is a nonpartisan organization. Our goal isn't to convince anyone WHO to vote for, but rather to make sure people are registered, they know when and where they'll vote in November, and that it's important to simply show up and vote!

In Mark's gospel, Jesus redefined what it means to be family. Rev. Ruth Lovell Bradham reminded us yesterday that while our families can love us deeply, they may not always understand where God is calling us. And that Jesus invites us into a bigger family defined by love, belonging, and willingness to follow God's call.

It was a beautiful message about the many ways family shapes us, challenges us, and surrounds us, how Jesus was human too with family drama, and how God's family of faith makes room for all of us as we grow into who God is calling us to be.

Todd & Carson came to Children's Chat yesterday and talked to our kiddos about Labor Day! They showed us some really cool tools, including a safety vest and hard hat that R modeled for us. We looked around the sanctuary at the steel support beams, the bricks, and even the pews and they explained to the kids that each of those things that we appreciate was put together by the hands of a laborer. 𝑺𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒇 - 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆'𝒔 𝒂 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒎𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝑮𝒆𝒐𝒓𝒈𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒃𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒐𝒐!

Todd & Carson ended in prayer, "Dear God, on this day, we celebrate the worker - the person who puts in the long hours in the heat, in cold, in the rain to make our life good. Amen."

We were honored to have Rev. Lucy yesterday. Reflecting on the life and death of Dolly Parton, she preached what it means to know who we are, answer our calling, and make the world better through our words and actions. Through the stories of Moses and Jesus, she reminds us that we don’t have to be fearless or perfect to follow God’s call, and that Jesus redefined the cross not as glorifying suffering or power, but as choosing love and life over fear and death.

The building lost power with yesterday's storm, and as of this morning at 9:00am there was no AC and no sound system. The Session decided to cancel.

Rev. Sarah is out of town for the next 3 weeks. Tomorrow, our Children's Director Carolyn Dodson-King will lead Godly Play Big. Godly Play is a Montessori-inspired way of sharing Bible stories with children, giving them space to wonder, ask questions, and discover the meaning of Scripture. Carolyn uses this every week for children's lessons, and she'll bring it into the sanctuary for the rest of us tomorrow!
