Alba Cornelia Swain

Cornelia Swain's family, friends, and congregation are touched by the number of inquiries about her funeral arrangements. It is comforting to know so many people want to honor her. If you knew Cornelia it will be no surprise that she prearranged to donate her body for research and medical training. With no need to rush, her family is trying to decide when it is best to hold a memorial service; it will most likely be on a Saturday on October or November at Faith CP Church in Bartlett, Tennessee. The decision, when made, will be widely announced.

Andy McClung, Cornelia's pastor

Alba Cornelia Swain, 93, of Memphis, Tennessee, died August 18, 2026. She was a member of Faith Cumberland Presbyterian Church (Cornerstone Presbytery) in Bartlett, Tennessee, where she served as an elder and in innumerable other ways. She was a longtime Cumberland Presbyterian denominational leader, Christian educator, writer, and advocate for women's and lay ministry. Raised in Jerusalem Cumberland Presbyterian Church (Murfreesboro Presbytery) in rural Middle Tennessee, Swain credited the small congregation with nurturing her Christian faith and her call to Christian service.

She became involved in denominational women's work by the 1960s and went on to serve the Cumberland Presbyterian Church professionally in Christian education, lay ministry, and women's ministry. She served in denominational Women's Ministry for more than 25 years before retiring in 2002. Swain's influence continued well beyond retirement through teaching, writing, congregational consulting, and ecumenical service. Endowments bearing her name support Cumberland Presbyterian Women's Ministry and Christian education, extending the work to which she devoted much of her life. A longtime member of Faith Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Swain was also known for her remarkable collection of more than 1,600 Nativity sets from around the world. Her life and ministry reflected a conviction formed in a small rural Cumberland Presbyterian congregation and carried throughout the denomination: Christian discipleship calls every believer to service.

Cumberland Presbyterian Resources special ordered $14.95 KJV Zondervan pew Bibles for a congregation in 2014 but the congregation changed their minds and returned the Bibles. Unfortunately, the barely used Bibles were no longer in "new" condition so we were unable to return them to the publisher. We've sold some at half-price $7.50 over the years but now we are ready to clear them out of the warehouse. Orders for 10 or more copies can have them at just $2 each! These are very heavy and additional shipping may be required.

Cumberland Presbyterian Center Inclement Weather Schedule

The Cumberland Presbyterian Center follows the Memphis/Shelby County Schools in closure for bad weather. This is a policy held in common by all of the boards, agencies, and institutions located at the denominational headquarters. If the schools are closed, so are the denominational offices. This does not preclude center staff from working from home nor does it apply to staff working remotely outside of the Memphis area.

Winter storm Fern covered the Memphis area in several inches of frozen precipitation, mostly sleet but also some snow and reportedly freezing rain. The Center was closed Monday through Friday, January 26-30, 2026, and will remain closed on Monday, February 2, 2026. Memphis Theological Seminary resumed their regular schedule on Monday and Bethel University in McKenzie, Tennessee, has announced they plan to reopen on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. It seems likely the Cumberland Presbyterian Center will also reopen on Tuesday but be sure to confirm before arriving.
