Once Upon a Blue Moon
What:
A Blue Moon is an extra full moon occurring due to the imposition of our mathematical calendar on a natural phenomenon. In May of 2026, the Flower Full Moon was May 1st. This month we have a 2nd one, a Blue Moon on May 31st, which is the 2nd full moon within a calendar month. For some, the blue moon is counted as the 4th one within a season, but, as modern urban dwellers, it is easier to comprehend and notice within the Gregorian calendar constructs than by planting season. In any event, 2026 will have 13 Full Moon in total for the year. There are always 12 in a year, but never more than 13. Despite its name, the moon does not actually change color.
When:
In Louisville, Kentucky, full Blue Moon in May 2026 will peak at exactly 4:45 a.m. EDT on Sunday, May 31. Because the moon will be near apogee (its farthest point from Earth during its orbit), this Blue Moon will appear slightly smaller and less bright than average, making it a "micromoon".
Why:
Once in a blue moon refers to something that is rare or elusive, perhaps even difficult to achieve.
As a result of placing a numerical manmade construct upon a natural event, there is systemic imperfection revealed. This may be viewed as a dichotomy of oppositions, which, nevertheless, meet in time and become apparent during a Blue Moon
How:
Meditate on and chant through oppositional concepts, which are part of the human experience. For example, chant the below while lighting candles representing the polarities on the continuum of energy. Traditionally for witches, this is visualized as God and Goddess energy that is within all.
Reason and Intuition,
Measurement and Fluidity,
Logic and Pulse,
Thought and Passion,
Past and Future,
Empirical and Psychic,
Physical and Imagination,
Wisdom and Innocence,
Sun and Moon,
God and Goddess.
The sensation of holding 2 diametrically opposite concepts simultaneously in one’s mind that is honored with this ritual. Concurrently, we honor our mundane needs and our spiritual presence. Both are necessary for our existence. Acceptance of our inner diversity sypports growth and healing.
