🚨NEW RESOURCE🚨
Download the 2025 PHP Impact Report
Hunger persists not because there is a lack of food, but because communities are denied access to the resources and conditions needed to thrive, including nutritious and culturally relevant food, fair wages, land and housing security, and a healthy environment. The Presbyterian Hunger Program partners with organizations around the world addressing these root causes through sustainable development, community empowerment, and advocacy for systemic change.

Excerpt: Texas is ground zero for the AI industry’s massive fossil fuel build out occurring across the country. Lured by prolific gas reserves and an industry-friendly government, AI companies have flocked to the Lone Star State in droves, erecting custom-built power plants capable of fueling entire cities.

The state has put more than 80 gigawatts of new gas power plants into its construction pipeline, more than any country besides China. Roughly half of those gas plants will provide power exclusively to data centers, according to Global Energy Monitor.

Floodlight teams up with PBS to investigate OpenAI’s flagship data center.

Last Friday, members of the PHP Advisory Committee and staff, along with colleagues from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and the Presbyterian Committee on the Self-Development of People, met with Rev. Angela Johnson of Grace Hope Presbyterian Church to learn about the many ways the congregation is serving Smoketown, one of Louisville’s oldest historically Black neighborhoods.

From a monthly mobile food pantry in partnership with Dare to Care, to community organizing through CLOUT: Citizens of Louisville Organized and United Together, to efforts to transform unused property into a senior living facility. Yesterday, Grace Hope also hosted a Guns to Gardens event, where community members could surrender weapons to be cut, melted down and transformed into garden tools or art.

Grace Hope is truly living up to its name, addressing immediate needs while also working toward long-term solutions to hunger, poverty and injustice in the community.

Yesterday, the Presbyterian Hunger Program Advisory Committee, along with colleagues from Presbyterian Committee on the Self-Development of People and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, had the opportunity to visit Common Earth Gardens, where community members can grow culturally appropriate food, build skills and create opportunities for additional income.

We also visited First Presbyterian Church - Jeffersonville, IN, an Earth Care Congregation putting environmental stewardship into practice through recycling initiatives, tree planting and a native species garden.

These visits were an important reminder that addressing hunger and caring for creation go hand in hand. From food sovereignty to environmental sustainability, local communities are cultivating practical solutions that strengthen both people and the planet.

Behind the AI hype are massive data centers consuming enormous amounts of energy and water, increasing pollution, straining power grids and often being built in communities already carrying the weight of environmental injustice.

We need transparency, regulation and local communities guiding the decisions about what happens to their land, air and water.

A meal in Peru leads Andrew from Rocoto Relleno and Andean potatoes into reflections on gravity, wonder, and what it means to stay grounded in a fractured world. Along the way, he explores the tension between equanimity and empathy, asking how we cultivate inner peace without losing our passion to confront injustice and reduce suffering.
