It’s easy to view new creation as happening when Jesus comes back. But that’s not what the Bible says. Paul says that our new lives begin now! Christ is in you. And if Christ is in you, you have eternal life. And if you have eternal life, why are you waiting to live in that fullness of life today? We have Jesus’s righteousness conferred to us! We have the ability to walk in the spirit. We can live a kingdom lifestyle today.

Paul believes that the Christian is no longer under the powers of darkness and sin anymore. But we have to participate in the victory of the cross in our lives. We have to set our minds on the things of the spirit and not on the things of the flesh. And this is where our self-identity and self-talk really come into play. Do we consistently identify ourselves as sinners under the power of sin or as redeemed under the power of the spirit? God wants us to identify in Christ! We can do it! We can walk in the spirit.

In Paul’s epistles, the word “righteousness” is used two ways. First, it can mean the righteousness of Jesus conferred to the believer, what scholars call “imputed righteousness.” Our guilt went to Jesus on the cross, and his right standing and innocence flows to us. Second, it generally means “to do the right thing” or “live the right way.” In Romans 8, Paul is leaning more on the first meaning but also on the second. We have been given the righteousness of Jesus — what are we going to do now?

Unlike the original Exodus, the trip back into darkness in our lives takes little effort. Our old self is always right there, especially if you don’t consider the old man dead. If we are going to live a kingdom lifestyle, we have to treat even short trips back into the domain of darkness and sin as repulsive, absurd, and unimaginable. We have everything that we need to be successful, including: the spirit of God, the Lord Jesus, and a faithful community around us.

When we read the story of the Exodus in scripture, it’s sometimes easy to wonder why they would go from seeing the plagues and the Reed Sea crossing to wanting to go back into slavery. In their time, they would have had to swim across (or travel around) the Reed Sea, taking enormous effort to get back to Egypt and the life of slavery that they left behind. That should sound absurd to us! It should be equally as absurd for us to live in the ways of darkness after coming to Christ.

There are many things that were given to us in Christ. We were transported from the domain of darkness into the kingdom of God. However, we still need to choose, first at our conversion, and then for every day going forward, to render our old selves dead. The power of sin has been broken in our lives! But how many of us live that way everyday? Sometimes, we still treat sin as if it has power over us. But that’s no longer true! Christ died so we could look forward without any weight of our past mistakes.

In Romans 6, Paul describes the Christian life being a move from death to new life. In between, Paul uses the symbol of water baptism as part of our conversion experience to signify the moment where we participate in the death of Christ and announce to the world that our old self is dead. We are free to walk in newness of life! Just like the Israelites left a land of slavery, passed through the water, and saw freedom on the other side, we embark on the new exodus at conversion.

It’s easy for us to imagine what life will be like in the future, when we have new bodies. That seems like new creation, and it is. But the truth is that new creation is also available today! The key is that we must be in relationship with Christ — we must be “in Christ.” Even though we have been transferred from the domain of darkness into the kingdom of God legally, the power of sin still tries to keep us from living to our full potential as new creations.

Jesus lived his whole life in obedience to God. His whole life, including his death, was sacrificial for us. And Jesus wants us to follow his example! Jesus wants us to present our lives as living sacrifices. New creation means that we have a new chance at life. We now have everything that we need to live like Jesus did. We are longer citizens of the domain of darkness but are citizens of the kingdom of God. Let’s live like it!
