Love begins in our minds and hearts without hypocrisy. But then, sometimes our motivations and desires and fears get mixed in as we go to act in love. For example, the Pharisees in Jesus’s day were doing the right things for the wrong reasons. They were like actors on a stage. Jesus asked them, “Are you loving for the right reasons? Or are you loving for the wrong reasons?” We can ask ourselves the same question as we act in the world today. “What am I hoping to get out of this? Can I love unselfishly?” Let’s not love to “be paid.”

“Just love more.” That’s not what Paul says in Romans 12. Paul assumes that these Christians are loving people. Paul’s concern is that our love would be genuine and without hypocrisy. Our core value “Love People” goes beyond the surface level of love. How we love others is important! Our love for others needs to be genuine.

In John 15, Jesus describes obedience as foundational to love. And when he does this, he relates obedience to staying attached to him, the vine. So when we disobey, we are separating ourselves from the Source of Life. Just like a kid running away from his parents, running away from God is pointless and leads us to experience separation from the One who can supply our needs.

At the end of Deuteronomy 6, we get the purpose of God’s commandments and why He cares so much about obedience — the commandments are for our good always! This should reorient how we view the commandments and how we view obedience. God wants what is good for us! Putting this in the perspective of a football game, many people view God as the referee waiting for us to make a mistake so He can throw a flag. But instead, we should view God as the coach, teaching us and coaching us so we can succeed in the game!

Why does Moses talk about loving God and obedience so closely together? Because the choice between Yahweh and the other gods of the ancient world was a choice between two vastly different views of reality and two vastly different ways of life. Unlike the other so-called deities of the ancient world, Yahweh wants to relate with His people as a loving Father. And while obedience is expected, as in any parent-child relationship, Yahweh allows us to ask questions, to bring our mind and thoughts to Him, and to wrestle with Him. God wants to be a Father to you!

When we talk about loving God, we have to recognize that God doesn’t need anything from us. In every other relationship we have, we should express our needs. At the same time, we should recognize that God is transcendent. He doesn’t need us. And so His commandment for us to love Him doesn’t come from a source of His need but rather a source of our need. Loving God is the best thing that we can do! Loving God is an invitation into the life we are meant to live.

In Mark 12, we find a man asking Jesus about the greatest commandment. Jesus responds with the command to love God with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Jesus arranged his life around his obedience to the Father. Everything that Jesus did was an expression of love for his Father. If Jesus lived this way, holding nothing back from the Father, how should we live?

It’s easy to view new creation as happening when Jesus comes back. But that’s not what the Bible says. Paul says that our new lives begin now! Christ is in you. And if Christ is in you, you have eternal life. And if you have eternal life, why are you waiting to live in that fullness of life today? We have Jesus’s righteousness conferred to us! We have the ability to walk in the spirit. We can live a kingdom lifestyle today.
