We are one week away from the Southern Baptist Convention in Orlando, Florida. We pray that God will bless the efforts of our churches as we partner to spread the gospel and equip men and women for faithful Christian ministry.
One way we can strengthen our cooperation is by affirming Albert Mohler's Truth and Unity Amendment to the SBC Constitution. This amendment clarifies the roles of pastor, elder, and overseer by stating that a cooperating church “does not act to affirm, appoint, or endorse a woman serving in the office or function of a pastor/elder/overseer, such as preaching to the assembled congregation.”
We believe it is time for our churches to clearly define our belief that the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture. We support this addition to the SBC Constitution for the following reasons:
- Scriptural Alignment: The amendment reinforces the biblical teaching and tradition of men leading and pastoring the church.
- Clarity on the Baptist Faith and Message: It clarifies the BFM 2000 statement that the office of pastor is limited to men, resolving recent confusion regarding its application.
- Denominational Unity: Passing this amendment ensures our partnership through the Cooperative Program remains founded on the clear teaching of Scripture.
- Functional Efficiency: This amendment enables us to move beyond the debate of who can be a pastor and allows us to focus on reaching the lost, planting churches, and training pastors.
Please pray that the convention approves the Truth and Unity Amendment and that God blesses our gathering as we hold firm to His word.
