Today the Church celebrates the Assumption of Mary — Solemnity.

Mary said yes without knowing the ending. Without knowing what was coming. Without guarantees that the road would be easy.

And she was faithful all the way through.

What we celebrate today is not only that she was taken body and soul into heaven. It's that she arrived there having trusted the entire journey to God — from the first yes to the last.

"Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word." — Luke 1:38

At Compass we've talked all summer about debt, work, and uncertainty. And we always come back to the same point:

Some things are in our hands. And some things are not.
The first: act with faithfulness.
The second: trust like Mary did.

May this solemnity remind you that the road doesn't need to be clear to be walked.

On August 14, 1941, Maximilian Kolbe — a Franciscan priest imprisoned in Auschwitz — heard that a man was about to be executed. He stood up and said: "I will go in his place."

He didn't know him. He owed him nothing. He didn't calculate anything.

He just gave.

That level of generosity feels unreachable. And yet, in smaller ways, it's exactly what authentic generosity asks of all of us: to give without calculating the return.

"No one has greater love than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." — John 15:13

In July we talked about giving from scarcity — like the widow at the Temple.
Today we talk about something even deeper: giving from love, where the logic of return simply stops operating.

Today the Church remembers St. Lawrence, deacon and martyr. When Roman authorities demanded he hand over the "treasures of the Church," he gathered the poor and presented them.

"These are the treasures of the Church."

That response isn't just a heroic gesture. It's a complete definition of what Compass teaches: what we value reveals who we are — and how we spend, save, and give confirms it.

"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." — Matthew 6:21

Today we celebrate St. James the Apostle.

A fisherman. No titles. No special credentials.
Jesus called him — and he left his nets and followed. That simply. That radically.

"Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And immediately they left their nets and followed him." — Mark 1:17-18

Sometimes we wait to have everything figured out before taking the next step. The right job, the debt paid off, the perfect conditions.

James reminds us that the road is made by walking.
Not before.

Today we celebrate Mary Magdalene — the first witness of the Resurrection.

The one who had carried seven demons. The one who stood at the foot of the cross when the others fled. The one who arrived at the tomb with a broken heart — and found something she didn't expect.

Not comfort. A voice that called her by name.

"Jesus said to her: 'Mary!'" — John 20:16

If you feel today like everything is lost — that there's no way out of the debt, that work isn't coming, that the effort isn't enough — this feast is for you.

God does not abandon. He calls by name.
