IS PRAYING ABOUT IT ENOUGH?
We, God’s people, have to learn to balance dependence on the Lord with responsible action. We can’t be people who act without prayer, and we can’t be people who pray without action.
Dr. Tony Evans put it this way: “To use available means without prayer is to be self-sufficient; to pray and not use available means is to be irresponsible.”
Our God is sovereign and in control, and He wants us to participate through prayer and prudence. Prayer tunes us into His purpose; prudence lets us take part in fulfilling it.
Nehemiah 4:9 shows both moves at once. God’s people asked Him to watch over them, and they appointed people to keep watch. They knew the effectiveness of their preparations remained in His hands.
Prudence means acting thoughtfully and wisely in the circumstances in front of us. It looks like recognizing a danger, considering our responsibility, and using the lawful, appropriate means God has provided.
Think of a parent who prays for a child’s spiritual growth and then opens the Bible with that child, or a believer who prays for freedom from a persistent sin and then removes easy access to that temptation.
A husband prays for his marriage, then takes responsibility for the conversations he’s been avoiding. He prays for his marriage, then dates his wife. He prays for his marriage, then comes to church with her.
Is praying about it enough? Prayer is where we start, and responsible action follows. Let’s never be people who only pray about it, or people who only do something about it.
