What does it mean to offer our lives as a "living sacrifice"?
It doesn't mean trying to do enough good things to earn God's favor.
It doesn't mean sacrificing enough of ourselves to somehow make ourselves worthy to stand in God's presence.
We couldn't do that.
Instead, Paul points us first to the mercy of God.
Jesus became the perfect sacrifice for us. On the cross, He did what no sacrifice we could ever make could accomplish. He didn't simply cover our sins. He defeated sin and death once and for all. And because Christ lives, we now live in Him.
Our everyday lives become an opportunity to worship the One who gave everything for us. In our families. In our work. In our friendships. In our service. In the ordinary gifts and vocations God has given us.
We don't live for Christ in order to earn His love. We live in response to the love He has already given us. That is what it means to be a living sacrifice.
