As we continue our Heroes at Rest series in honor of America's 250th anniversary, we remember Benjamin Gratz Brown (1826–1885), one of the most influential figures laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Brown served as a Colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War, raising and commanding the 4th U.S. Reserve Corps in Missouri. After his military service, he went on to become Missouri's 20th Governor, served in the United States Senate, and was the 1872 Democratic and Liberal Republican nominee for Vice President of the United States.

His life was defined by leadership, public service, and a commitment to shaping Missouri's future. Today, we are honored to preserve the final resting place of a man whose impact reached far beyond Kirkwood and whose legacy remains an important part of both Missouri and American history.

As America celebrates 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we're honored to remember some of the veterans whose stories are forever connected to Oak Hill Cemetery.

We begin with Richard Smith Elliott (1817–1890), a lieutenant with the Laclede Rangers who served during the Mexican-American War with General Stephen Watts Kearny's Army of the West.

In addition to Lieutenant Elliott’s duties in the Laclede Rangers, he served as a regular correspondent to the St. Louis Reveille. Elliott provided readers back home with written accounts of the war before eventually returning to St. Louis.

Following the war, Elliott became one of the founders of the City of Kirkwood, helping purchase the land that would grow into the community we know today.

The text on his headstone reads:
Beloved Husband And Father
Veteran of Mexican War

A True Pioneer

His service to both his country and his community reminds us that history isn't only found in books. It's also found right here at Oak Hill Cemetery.
