Silence isn't always golden. Sometimes it's a weight that shapes entire lives. In yesterday's homily, Rev. Mike Morran drew on a reflection from Dr. Vera Hart on the hidden toll of staying quiet, from keeping the peace in our families to protecting our reputations at work. A reminder of how a life can look whole on the outside while fraying within.
Is the safety of silence worth the cost of the truth? Listen to the full service: https://bit.ly/4cXrEsE

Meet Marsha Bates, a Unitarian Universalist for 40 years and a returning member of the First Unitarian Society of Denver's Board of Trustees.

Although raised a Baptist, Marsha Bates has been a Unitarian-Universalist for 40 years. She attended and was active in UU churches in Columbus, Ohio; Kansas City, Kansas; Fort Myers, Florida; and Denver. Marsha served various roles in those UU churches: chair of the Stewardship Committee, taught Sunday School, served on the Worship Committee, coordinated the greeters, served as an usher, assisted in rewriting the All Faiths’ policy manual, and volunteered to help with various church gatherings. When Chris (her husband) and she lived in Denver from 1995 to 2005, they both were active in FUSD. Marsha taught Sunday School, was on the Board of Trustees, and served as President of the Board the year after the Hobarts left and an interim minister was serving the church. Marsha also co-chaired Octoberfest, FUSD’s fall fundraiser. Marsha earned a degree in Natural Resource Management and spent her career managing hazardous waste cleanup projects as well as auditing other’s projects for compliance with regulatory requirements.

Statement of interest:
I value FUSD. When I first searched for a UU church after moving to Denver in 1995, the warmth of the community was immediately apparent from the moment I entered its doors. Upon returning in 2024, that same sense of being in the midst of a loving community was still there. My past experiences and roles filled at FUSD and other UU churches has made me well aware that dedicated leaders are required to sustain a loving, nurturing community. I would be happy and honored to serve on the FUSD Board of Trustees.
