How do we fill our gas tanks? The Other Half Of Church, by Jim Wilder and Michel Hendricks, says we can’t choose joy any more than we can choose lower blood pressure. But in the same way that there are things we can do indirectly to affect our blood pressure, there are practices we can take up to expand our capacity for joy and “fill up our joy tanks.”

Some examples include:

Being with a friend → having fun with them

Having an honest, heartful conversation → one of those conversations where you feel seen and known and loved.

Reflecting on moments that you’re grateful for →
maybe keeping a gratitude journal

Even some very simple, ordinary practices like →
smiling or making eye contact with others

One simple practice → Imagining the face of Jesus, smiling at you, his face lit up with joy.

Here's the thing. It's good to be together. To be in the same room. You are not alone. It's good to turn our attention to God...together. And it's really good that God is here with us. The Spirit of God at work. Shaping us. Forming us. More often than not, this shaping is subtle. Slowly. Over time. But trust, friends, the Spirit is at work. We gather in simplicity. Taking up the practices that God's people have been taking up for thousands of years. It's good to gather together. God is here. The Holy Spirit is at work. See you Sunday.

Well, that's incredibly good news.

The old order of things- sin and death and evil– is passing away. One day it will be fully gone and God’s new creation will be fully here.
One day there will be no more tears, no more death, no more mourning, crying or pain.

No more broken systems, broken families, broken hearts.

Take heart, breathe deep, we are headed to a day when the curse of sin will be no more. God will do it. Jesus is not finished. We will spend eternity in a renewed earth- not disembodied souls floating off to heaven– no, heaven and earth made one.

AND…

Here and now, Jesus is at work to heal our world. Jesus invites us to partner with him in the renewal of all things!Take a moment to simply receive this good news. Ask Jesus to help you act like it is true.

Food is a big deal in the Bible. It reminds us of God's care and provision and abundance. In the Bible, sharing a table with someone is also a big deal. It's an act of deep connection and fellowship. In the gospels you’ll notice that so much of Jesus’ ministry happened around dinner tables and at banquets and parties.
Why?
Because sharing a table with people declared welcome, belonging, a bond like kinship.
The table transformed outsiders into insiders, strangers into friends. It was a really tangible experience of the Kingdom of God in our midst.

Have you ever stopped to consider: why did Jesus spend so much time eating with people? 🍽️ All this to say: there is a place for you at the table. And it is good to keep making space for others around the table. Shift the chairs, add another placemat, go find the extra forks. Keep setting the table for others to taste and see that God is really, really good.

Joy is the experience of being with someone. Being with someone who is really glad to be with you.
Being with God. Being with others. It’s sharing in delight and connection.
This is the life we were made for. God with us. God inviting us into life with others. At its core, joy is Jesus with us.

Let's keep celebrating together. The big moments. The small ones. All the ways the Spirit of God is at work bringing forth life. 🎉 "When the substance of our life is formed and conformed and transformed into Christlikeness, then celebration becomes possible. No longer do we undermine or sabotage the good work of God. We can simply and joyfully celebrate the goodness of God in us and in those around us."- Richard Foster 🎈|| Celebrate the goodness of God today. What might that look like for you?

Deep breath, Jesus is setting the world right. Take heart, friends, new creation is breaking through and will one day be fully here. So show up. Pray- Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done. Work in a garden. Create. Seek justice. Set a really beautiful table. Welcome the stranger. Laugh deeply. Receive God's kindness. Love your neighbor. Weep with those who are weeping. Write a poem. Take a nap. Move towards others. Embrace goodness and beauty and wholeness. Act in ways that anticipate God's new world. Together.

This past Sunday we started a new teaching series on resilient joy. Here is a simple prayer that led us in: Give us new life and wonder that we can offer to the world, Lord. Take a moment and pray that for yourself. Pray that for us as a community. Open us to wonder, Lord. Open us to new life.
