St. Margaret’s Ex-Students’ Association (SMESA)

St. Margaret’s Ex-Students’ Association (SMESA) The St. Margaret's Ex-Students Association (SMESA) is a registered society of former students of St. Margaret's Schools (Primary and Secondary) in Singapore St.

Margaret’s, Singapore’s oldest girls school, was established in 1842 by Mrs Maria Dyer of the London Missionary Society. It was originally named the Chinese Girls’ School. Orphan girls who were mui tsai (girls sold to servitude) were given an education in English and were taught home-making skills and the Christian faith at the school. In 1861, the school moved from North Bridge Road to 134 Sophia Road. In 1900, it came under the auspices of the Church of England Zenana Missionary Society and was known as CEZMS School. After World War II, the name was changed to St. Margaret’s School. In 1960, the secondary school moved to 111 Farrer Road, while the primary school remained at Sophia Road. Today, St. Margaret’s vision of character-building prevails. As an established, dynamic school, she continues to stimulate minds and nurture lives to produce women of Charity, Patience and Devotion.

From a shophouse on North Bridge Road to campuses on Sophia Road and Farrer Road. From mui tsai to prefects. The values of Charity, Patience, Devotion that were written into that very first class in 1842 still shape every girl who walks through our gates. And each new cohort doesn't just inherit Herstory–they write the next chapter of it. 💚🤍

The uniform that makes St Margaret's girls instantly recognisable came from a school-wide design contest won by Mdm Lim Kah Pheck, the secondary school's own art teacher. 🎨🖌️ When students were polled decades later on retiring the design, the answer was a resounding no, proving how one teacher’s legacy had become every girl’s identity.

When peace returned, so did the whistle. St Margaret's girls found new ground to grow on as netball courts, swimming pools, and Girl Guide troops became part of school life. Education was no longer just about books and Bibles; it was about building confident, capable young women, ready to lead both in and out of the classroom. 🏆🎹🩰💯
