1.1 million pupils in SA victims of school violence â and teachers are major perpetrators
Stats SA data shows more than 1.1 million pupils reported school violence in 2024, with 14% citing teachers for physical violence compared with 8% who named fellow pupils.
The more than 1.1 million pupils who reported experiencing violence represent roughly one in every 11 children in the schooling system. Girls remained disproportionately affected, accounting for 62.5% of verbal abuse and 57.7% of physical violence cases involving teachers.
