Hello everyone, here are some questions for personal Bible study or group discussion based on Sunday’s sermon. May God minister to you as you spend time in His Word.

“The Lord of Breakthrough”
Scripture reading: 2 Samuel 5:17-25

Bible Study Questions:

1. Before every battle, David “enquired of the Lord?” How does this concept relate to our context? Is it okay to react first and then to ask God to bless our efforts? How does David’s example challenge the way we deal with the challenges we face?

2. When the Philistines heard that David had become king they employed their full force against him. What does this teach us about persecution and the consequences of following God’s plans for our lives?

3. David went down to the “stronghold” when the Philistines challenged him. This stronghold is later identified as the Cave of Adullam (1 Chron. 11:15-16). David used this stronghold many times to retreat from his enemies and to enquire of the Lord. Many of the Psalms were written here (for example Psalm 57 and Psalm 142). What does this stronghold represent in our lives today?

4. God gave David 2 different strategies in his fight against the Philistines, although the circumstances remained unchanged? What does this teach us about the importance of hearing from the Lord?

5. David called the site of the first battle “Baal Perazim” which means “The Lord of Breakthrough.” What do you think David meant by this name and what does breakthrough look like in our lives today?

6 When God burst through the Philistine defence, they abandoned their idols. Why do you think this was significant?

7. The Philistines were a constant enemy of Israel. Although David won many battles against them, they kept on coming back. What are some of the relentless battles that impact our daily lives? Can God use these battles to shape who we become? If so, how? (READ of Paul’s example in 2 Corinthians 12:7-10)

8. During the second battle, God told David and his men to wait at the balsam trees for his signal. These trees produced a highly valued resin used as a medicine for healing. How is the healing of our hearts a greater breakthrough even than overcoming our enemy, and what hope can this produce in our lives?

Good day, friends. Here are a few questions to ponder upon as we reflect on this past Sunday’s sermon, “Shining in Integrity”.

1 Samuel 24:4-19 (NLT)

1 Saul sought to kill David, as did Goliath. Why do you think David dealt differently between these two men who sought to kill him and what can we learn from this?

2 What is integrity and how does God use it to protect us in life?

3 David rebuked his men for trying to convince him to kill Saul. What is David teaching us when facing our enemies?

4. In this instance, Saul’s attitude towards David changed after he saw David’s kindness. How does integrity relate to spiritual warfare and what hope does integrity hold for the church should people not cease to persecute us?

5. David’s integrity would fail later in life when he took another man’s wife. How does God restore integrity, and how do we ensure we maintain our integrity?

6. “Integrity is not improvised in crisis -It is formed in hidden fellowship with God”. What does integrity require and what must be surrendered to God for integrity to grow?

Good day, friends. Here are a few questions to ponder upon as we reflect on this past Sunday’s sermon, “Resting in God as Adversity Rises”.

1 Samuel 16:14-23 (NLT)

1 Saul loved David at the start of their relationship, but we know that this did not last. What do you think turned Saul’s heart away from God and David?

2 David was anointed by Samuel prior to him serving Saul. What does this teach us about David’s heart in his willingness to serve the man whom God wanted him to replace?

3 Later, Saul would attack David, throwing a spear at him. Why do you think David chose not to retaliate or attempt to overthrow Saul as king. What can we learn from David’s journey to kingship?

4. Saul was grasping at a throne he was losing while David waited for a throne he was promised. How do we know when God wants us to take action, and what do we do in the interim?

5. How would you compare Saul’s leadership versus David’s? What are important leadership traits for a Christian?

6. Why is pride so dangerous and how did David overcome the temptation of pride?
