Philoxenia | Loving Strangers

This Sunday, Amo shared across all three services about the power of hospitality and what it looks like to welcome people with what we already have in our hearts and hands.

We were reminded that hospitality can open doors for people to encounter the love of the Father, and that we are called to be a people who make room for others.

May we be a church that welcomes, loves, and makes room for others.

See you this Sunday!

Register before 9 September, by following the link in our bio.

On 16 September, we’re gathering to celebrate the people who serve so faithfully across the life of our church. It will be a chance to touch base, share vision, enjoy some good food, and simply kuier together.

We’re incredibly grateful for every person who gives their time, energy, gifts, and heart to help create space for others to encounter Jesus.

7 Weeks of Praise: Week 2 with

Honours year at Stellenbosch had worn her down to exhausted and discouraged, with a five-hour exam paper waiting the next morning and nothing left in the tank. She walked into a Sunday evening service, chose to praise in the middle of all of it, and walked out energised and ready. The circumstances hadn’t changed. The perspective had.

Praise you put on, not praise you wait to feel. That’s tehillah.

“the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit” Isaiah 61:3 (ESV)

This week, when the heaviness comes, put on a praise song and sing it out loud.

For seven weeks we’re going deep into seven Hebrew words for praise: yadah, tehillah, halal, todah, zamar, barak and shabach. What each one means, where we find it in Scripture, how to live it out.

This Sunday, we opened up the floor for a Q&A, where we could answer honest questions and dive deeper into what Scripture actually says about some controversial topics.

Our morning services were led by Eddie, Gert and Luke, with Luke and Eddie continuing the conversation in the evening.

We tackled some challenging questions, and had good conversations about various topics.

We were reminded that God is love (1 John 4:8) and that hell was not created for humanity, but for Satan and his demons (Matthew 25:41).

As Christians, we need to know what Scripture says and allow the truth of God’s Word to shape the way we understand difficult questions.

Not every question has a simple answer, but we can always go back to the Word and trust the character of the God who is Love.

FIRST LOVE | ONE-DAY WORSHIP

First Love is our monthly worship gathering where we simply lock eyes with Jesus - setting everything else aside and making space to encounter Him in worship.

This month, we’re doing things a little differently.

We’re joining VICTORY CHURCH for their annual 1-Day Worship - 24 hours of non-stop worship from 4-5 September, 18:00-18:00.

You’re invited to join any session throughout the 24 hours as we worship alongside the other churches in George.

As the Shofar George family, we’ll be leading two dedicated worship slots:

- Friday 4 Sept | 19:30-21:00 - Shofar George Youth Team
- Saturday 5 Sept | 16:30-18:00 - First Love Band

Come for one session, stay for more, or spend the night worshipping.

For seven weeks we’re going deep into seven Hebrew words for praise: yadah, tehillah, halal, todah, zamar, barak and shabach. What each one means, where we find it in Scripture, how to live it out.

David wrote Psalm 54 while surrounded by people who had betrayed him. His circumstances hadn’t changed.
His posture had.
Surrender before deliverance. That’s yadah.

“With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you; I will give thanks to your name, O LORD, for it is good.” Psalm 54:6 (ESV)

This week, let your hands remind your heart to praise.

This Sunday, Amo brought the Word in both our morning services.

Through Scripture, we were challenged to consider how we use the freewill God has given us and how we represent Him to those around us.

“But in your hearts honour Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defence to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you...” - 1 Peter 3:14–15

When we share the Truth with the people around us, we should'nt want to simply win an argument - we should want to win the souls. Our faith should be lived out with truth, love and gentleness, pointing people towards Jesus.

In the evening service, Eddie shared a powerful message on evangelism and being prepared to share the Gospel.

“Evangelism is just one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread.”

Through Luke 12:11–12 and the story of Paul and Agrippa in Acts 26, we were reminded that preparation is prayer and that God gives us the words we need when we step out in faith.

Both Amo and Eddie challenged us to take sharing our testimony seriously, and to use it as a weapon for the Kingdom. Our testimony is a powerful declaration of what Jesus has done in our lives, and we are called to be ready and willing to share it.

We don't need to have all the answers. We simply need to have faith, know our testimony, and be willing to point others to Jesus. 🙌
