“If we are not changed by grace, then we are not saved by grace.” James puts it plainly: “Faith, if it hath not works, is dead” (James 2:17). Real grace doesn’t leave a man where it found him—it changes him.

Tozer says it like this: “The flaming desire to be rid of every unholy thing and to put on the likeness of Christ at any cost is not often found among us.” (pg. 76 The Root of Righteousness) Grace isn’t passive. It sanctifies. It hurts. And it heals.

He points to Rutherford, who could shout in the midst of trials, “Praise God for the hammer, the file and the furnace.” The hammer drives, the file scrapes, and the furnace burns—until the man is conformed to Christ.

If those tools aren’t at work in your life, Tozer would say—maybe grace isn’t either.
