Daily Devotion for Saturday 30th May 2026

Read – Acts 2:1-13

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (vs.8)

Why do we need the Holy Spirit in our lives? The Holy Spirit is God being present in our lives. Jesus promised the disciples and us: “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever” (John 14:16)

The Advocate or Helper came at Pentecost. He assures us that we belong to God. “The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” (Romans 8:16) He will be our teacher: “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” (John 14:26).

Having the Holy Spirit in us we become the temple of God as His Spirit dwells in us. (1 Corinthians 3:16). He is “the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” (John 14:17) “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.” (John 16:13)

Most importantly we are empowered for service “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

This Outreach Friday, we’re coming together to bless children in our community through our Backpack Blessings project. Our Creative Hearts team has lovingly handmade pencil bags, and we are now collecting new or gently preloved stationery to help fill them with hope, care, and encouragement for children who may be starting school with very little.
If you would like to help, we would greatly appreciate donations of pens, pencils, crayons, exercise books, rulers, erasers, glue sticks, or any stationery items. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in a child’s life.

Daily Devotion for Friday 29th May 2026

Read – Acts 2:1-13

“They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.” (vs.3)

The Church received the Holy Spirit at a moment God chose. The Church had not become more committed, prayerful, or spiritual. The gift of the Spirit was entirely a matter of grace. The Spirit was given to each person in the Church, as the tongues of fire separating and resting on each person shows.

The Spirit represented a new commitment of God to the covenant relationship summarized in Leviticus 26:17 “I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people.”

Three miraculous signs accompanied the giving of the Spirit: the sound of the wind, ‘pneuma’, which could signify both wind and Spirit; tongues of fire, which points to the worldwide mission of the Church to preach the Gospel; and the speaking “in other tongues” which also pointed to the preaching mission we have.

Speaking in tongues was not a sign of spirituality or a second blessing. No condition was demanded for receiving the gift. Its value was not mentioned in the New Testament again.

The emphasis at Pentecost was that God gave His Spirit to all His people to witness and prophesy. The signs were given to interpret the great gift of the Spirit and enable the widening of the Church’s witness. Speaking in tongues was never intended to be evidence that a Christian was filled with the Spirit.

Meditation: God’s Gift is free for every Christian.

Daily Devotion for Thursday 28th May 2026

Read – Acts 2:1-13

“Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” (vs.2f).

There were four visible signs of the unique work of the Holy Spirit, when this Age of the Church was launched. There was the sound of rushing wind, the appearance of a fireball of leaping tongues of flames, and the separation of the fireball into individual flames, which came to rest on each of the assembled believers, There was the outburst of sound, as all in the band of believers spoke in languages that were foreign to them.

The gift of the Spirit to the Church at Pentecost fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies concerning the Spirit and Jesus’ promises to His disciples. No other passage in the New Testament is an exact parallel. Yet often we are made aware of the Holy Spirit filling believers and empowering them for ministry. (Disciples Study Bible)

What God began in the unique Pentecost event has continued throughout the life of the church. All Christians receive the Spirit.

“Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off - for all whom the Lord our God will call.” (Acts 2:38-39)

Prayer: Dear Lord, O fill us afresh with your Holy Spirit.

Daily Devotion for Wednesday 27th May 2026

Read – Acts 1:4-9

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (vs. 8)

“Most of the time, we are looking for the wrong kind of power in the wrong place. The only power that will fully satisfy a spiritual being is spiritual power, exercised not for himself but in submission to the will of God who gives it. That is what Jesus promises us, and we can rely on Him. He is “faithful and true”. He never promises in vain: what He says He will do. “You shall receive power…” there is no shadow of doubt about it.

“This is not the same sort of power the world often seeks. It is not temporal power. It is not material power. It is not intellectual power. It is spiritual power. The power Jesus spoke about, was spiritual. It was a gift from God. It was not something that can be manufactured, or organised, created or planned. It comes from above. No one can steal or sn**ch it; it is a gift from the hand of God our Heavenly Father.

“God Himself is the only Source of power, and He conveys it through His Spirit. Power, then, is the gift of the Spirit. The gift is the Spirit and the Spirit is the gift. Enduement with power is accomplished by the coming of the Third Person of the Trinity.0 He is rightly called “the Comforter, the Strengthener, the Enabler, the Empowerer.”

No one else can provide power except the Holy Spirit. If we lack power in our spiritual life, it is because we are not appropriating the resources of the Spirit. Power and Spirit belong together.

Daily Devotion for Tuesday 26th May 2026

Read – Acts 1:4-9

“For John baptized with water but, in a few days, you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” (vs. 2)

On Sunday we celebrated Wesley Sunday with Pentecost Sunday. It is a day we as Methodists celebrate because it was on the 24th of May 1738 that John Wesley had a Spiritual experience which changed him, and God used him to change the situation in England. Through him God started a revival and the Methodist church came into being. (THE METHODIST BEDSIDE BOOK)

We all experience times when we doubt our faith. John Wesley wanted to stop preaching, because of his doubts. Peter Bohler tells him, “By no means. Preach faith till you have it; and then, because you have it, you will preach faith.” He met several times with Peter, times when he was in despair. On the 14th of May he recorded: “The beginning of the day I was very heavy, weary, and unable to pray, I longed to find Christ, that I might show him to all mankind; that I might praise, that I might love Him.” On the 16th of May again, “I wake weary, faint and heartless.”

Wesley records “On the 24th of May in the evening I went unwillingly to a society in Aldersgate Street, where one was reading Luther’s preface to the Epistle to the Romans. About a quarter before nine, while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone, for salvation; and an assurance was given me that He has taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death.” This experience changed Wesley and he became empowered to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. God empowered him with His Holy Spirit.
