Patronage: Schoolgirls
St. Madeleine wanted to be a Carmelite lay sister, but with Father Joseph Varin and three other postulants, she founded the Society of the Sacred Heart on November 21, 1800. The Society is devoted to the Sacred Heart, and dedicated to teaching girls. Madeleine was appointed Superior General of the Society at age 23 and held the position for 63 years. Receiving papal approval of the Society in 1826, she founded 105 houses in many countries.

Saint Joanna the Myrrh-bearer was the wife of Chuza, the steward of King Herod Antipas. She was cured of evil maladies by Jesus, then followed and provided for Him and His apostles. (Luke 8:1-3) She was one of the women who discovered the empty tomb on Easter morning. (Luke 24:10) Saint Joanna is known to have carried the myrrh that was to prepare Jesus at death.

St. Lydia was Saint Paul's first known convert and the seller of purple cloth, as mentioned in the New Testament:
On the Sabbath, we went outside the city gate along the river where we thought there would be a place of prayer. We sat and spoke with the women who had gathered there. One of them, a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth, from the city of Thyatira, a worshiper of God, listened, and the Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what Paul was saying. After she and her household had been baptized, she offered us an invitation, "If you consider me a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my home," and she prevailed on us.

St. Brendan the Navigator, an Irish saint, lived from 484 to 577. He was one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland. He is most known for his legendary travels, especially to the “Isle of the Blessed”, also known as Saint Brendan’s Island. He is said to have encountered a sea monster and to have celebrated Easter Mass on the back of a giant whale!

Patronage: people with leprosy

Father Damien or St. Damien of Molokai was a priest from Belgium and a member of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, a missionary religious institute. He won recognition for his ministry in the Kingdom of Hawaii, to people with leprosy, who had been placed under a government-sanctioned medical quarantine on the island of Molokai. After 16 years caring for the physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of those in the l***r colony, he eventually contracted and died of the disease.
