Bet Mishpachah

Founded in 1975, the congregation now has over 175 members. Thus you will find that Erev Shabbat services vary depending on the service leader(s).

Bet Mishpachah is a congregation for Gay, Le***an, Bisexual, Transgender, and Q***r Jews and all who wish to participate in an inclusive, egalitarian, and mutually supportive community. They meet for weekly Shabbat servic

es, educational events, social action/social justice community service, and holidays. Membership is comprised of singles, couples, and families, and is open to everyone, regardless of religious affiliation, sexual orientation, or gender identity. While there is a part-time rabbi, Rabbi Jake Singer-Beilin who leads approximately half the weekly services, Bet Mishpachah has always been a lay-led congregation. One night, you may hear more Sephardic melodies - more traditional European songs another; the blessings read from the bimah one week differ from poems you may learn the next week. Bet Mishpachah is a founding member Keshet Ga’avah - the World Congress of GLBTQ Jews, and the Celebration of the Spirit Coalition; members of the Network of Independent Jewish Communities & Havurot; the Jewish Funeral Practices Committee of Greater Washington; and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington.

It's week three of Elul!

We all have things that we’ve done in the past year that we wish to let go of before the new year. In order to be as holy as we can be when 5787 enters, we should rid ourselves of those things that are standing in our way and blocking our path. To be holy is to be separate from the mundane, and this week we identify that things we wish to separate from. Release that which is weighing you down, and start to feel the lightness.

Shleimut, wholeness is possible and is a goal toward which we strive. Its related word, Shalom, teaches us that peace is not simply the absence of conflict, but is a sense of completion and order.

When we have repaired that which was broken within ourselves and within our relationships, we may attain inner peace.

This is a peace that will endure and fill us up. This week, we try to find those moments of peace and wholeness that will sustain us.

Elul Week 1: Beginning to Repair What is Broken

We begin the process by identifying what feels broken, and finding ways in which we can move toward Tikkun - Repair.

We are not yet at the place where we feel entirely whole, but we want to map out the ways in which we can get there.

This is a process, and not always an easy one. It is OK to ask for help--from loved ones, from the Holy One, from our community.

We commit ourselves to the potential for repair to occur, and search for the strength to work toward it.

In the month of Elul, the last month of the Jewish calendar year, we prepare our hearts and minds and bodies for the high holy days. This year, Bet Mish will start each Monday that falls in Elul with a meditation, plus recommendations for readings and songs as we move in the light of our theme for this year: "I am holy, I am whole."

Join us as we move through the month of Elul towards wholeness in the new year and the holiest days in the Jewish calendar.
