The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta (commonly known as the "Order of Malta") is a lay, religious order and a sovereign subject of international law that provides humanitarian relief worldwide. THE ORDER OF MALTA IN THE UNITED STATES

The origins of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta in the United States date back to 1927 in New York City wit

h the founding of the American Association. By the 1950's, the membership had grown so geographically diverse that the Sovereign Council established the Western Association in San Francisco to encompass the nine western states, Alaska, and Hawaii. The Order continued to increase in membership over the next twenty years and, in 1974, the Sovereign Council approved the formation of the Southern Association—which is known today as the Federal Association, U.S.A. Membership more and more is being recognized for what it truly must be, a commitment to spiritual development through personal service and sacrifice. Today there are well over 3,000 Knights and Dames among the three Associations in the United States. Associations have grown, they have continually expanded the scope of their support of various charitable projects, both domestically and internationally, that align with the mission of the Order—to care for the poor and the sick. While many Knights and Dames have generously supported these projects financially—there has been an equal emphasis upon their hands-on involvement. Members themselves minister to the sick in hospitals and clinics; care for AIDS patients; feed the poor in soup kitchens; clothe and shelter the homeless; tend to and comfort the elderly; aid battered women; staff day care centers for poor, working mothers. Associations holds a variety of special Masses, retreats, and other like-exercises throughout the country for their members to assist them in their continual spiritual development. “Like all religious orders, the aim of The Order of Malta is the greater glory of God through the sanctification of its members.” Though most members today do not take religious vows—other than that of obedience—the purpose of the Order still is the spiritual development of its members.

During the 2026 Lourdes Pilgrimage, a special mural dedication took place at the Church of the Sacred Heart of Lourdes, which was made possible through the support of the Federal Association, and in particular, Wayne Ruth, GCMOb. The church contains the baptismal font used for St. Bernadette Soubirous' baptism and has been visited by the pilgrims from the Federal Association for several years. The mural, completed by Philippe Pujo, depicts Bernadette Soubirous and various townspeople, which are artistically drawn with similiarities to many familiar individuals associated with the Federal Association. Thierry Lavit, the Mayor of Lourdes, was present, along with the elected municipal council of Lourdes, H.E. Ernie Bono, GCMOb., President of the Federal Association, Christian Gélis, President of Le Toit du Choeur, Jean-François Duhar, Co-President of Le Toit du Choeur, Fr. Pierre Jamet, priest of the Sacred Heart of Lourdes parish, and H.E. Abbot Placid Solari, O.S.B., Conventual Chaplain ad Honorum.

A few selected features and speeches are included in the attached video.

On the first anniversary of his election to the See of Peter, Pope Leo XIV paid a pastoral visit to Pompeii today, on the Feast of the Supplication to the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary.
On this special occasion, the Grand Master Fra’ John T. Dunlap has sent a letter of good wishes to the Pontiff, in which he emphasised how the Pope has “wisely combined respect for Tradition with openness to the challenges of the present day, embodying that balance between continuity and renewal of which the Church is in such deep need.”
For the Order of Malta, the Pope’s visit is also an opportunity to recall the service provided at the soup kitchen "Pilgrim House" in Pompeii by the Grand Priory of Naples and Sicily: for over ten years, some 55 volunteers have been serving more than 42,000 meals a year to those in need. A work of mercy that concretely responds to the Holy Father’s call not to leave anyone on the margins.
