Church State Council

Church State Council The Church State Council is a non-profit educational, advocacy and legal services ministry of the Pacific Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.

The Council serves the five western states of Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah. The Council upholds the principles of liberty of conscience and religion and the separation of church and state, and protects the rights of people of all faiths to accommodation for their religious beliefs and practices in the workplace. We are committed to the principle of freedom of thought and belief as

a gift of God. We believe, too, that this freedom extends not only to acts of worship but to the expression of faith through charity and service. Hence, we work vigorously to protect and defend the rights of both individuals, and religious associations, charities and ministries.

"The Bible indicates...that Satan will trick a lot of Christians into setting up a counterfeit kingdom of God on earth before Jesus returns – one that says it’s from Jesus, but is actually antichrist. This kingdom will seem righteous, but it will employ force in matters of faith. This will not be of God.

But here’s the really good news: during a time when spiritual darkness will be thick, God’s character of love will shine brighter than ever though His people who want to live and love like Jesus! In fact, the last day people of God will look a lot like the church in the book of Acts - a church that is proclaiming the gospel and living it out by welcoming the stranger, feeding the hungry, advocating for the oppressed, and loving their persecutors. (See Isaiah 60:1-3, 61:1-2; Matt. 25:31-46; Matt. 5:44)."

Jonathon Cherne writes in Liberty Magazine that "Charlie Kirk was right about one thing: America is weary. Families are strained. Communities are fragmented. Souls are restless. The biblical seventh-day Sabbath—sundown Friday to sundown Saturday—offers a profound remedy for those willing to receive it freely. But freedom is the necessary precondition of faithfulness.

A coerced uniform day of rest will not revive America’s soul. If the Sabbath is to transform lives, it must be chosen—not compelled. America does not need enforced uniformity to flourish. It needs citizens who are free to follow God according to conscience."

Just a few days ago, Dan Patrick, chairman of President Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission, said that the separation of church and state is is the “biggest lie that’s been told in America since our founding.”

Let’s discuss the truthfulness of that claim and why it matters.

The history of the Puritans in Colonial America illustrates how even well-meaning Christians can justify persecution in the name of Christ. In fact, Jesus predicted that professed followers of God would persecute prior to His return, telling the disciples that “the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God” (John 16:2, NIV). White similarly saw the prophecies of Revelation 13 being fulfilled by “Protestant churches” controlling the government. She wrote:

“When Protestant churches shall unite with the secular power to sustain a false religion,” “when the state shall use its power to enforce the decrees and sustain the institutions of the church—then will Protestant America have formed an image to the papacy [a church-state union].”

Is Christian nationalism the solution to a world in crisis?

Dan Patrick vs. Thomas Jefferson

"It is time to set the record straight: there is no such thing as ‘separation of church and state’ in the Constitution." - Dan Patrick, DOJ Religious Liberty Commission chairman

"I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church & State." - Thomas Jefferson
