Psalm 82:3-4 “Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; uphold the rights of the afflicted and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy; save them from the hand of the wicked.”

So thankful for those who have done this even when it cost their lives.

California State Senate prayer before session on Memorial Day 1953. A very Biblical and Christ-centered prayer. Sadly, a prayer like this would never be heard in our State Senate or Assembly these days.

HAPPY RESURRECTION DAY!

1 Peter 1:3 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead!”

Big things are happening in the world today, but by far the biggest is that over 2 billion people (!) are pausing to acknowledge the most significant event in the history of the world: when the one true and living God sent his anointed son Jesus to suffer and die for the forgiveness of the sins of everyone who will place their trust in Him, and Jesus miraculously came back to life, proving his identity as the divine son of God who has conquered death for us and rules and reigns forever. Thank you Lord!

Many “long centuries have come and gone and today Jesus is the centerpiece of the human race and the leader of the column of progress. I am far within the mark when I say that all the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever were built; all the parliaments that ever sat and all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as has that one solitary life." - James Allan Francis

Today is called “Good Friday” because something very, very, good happened on this day centuries ago, culminating at about 3pm.

Jesus, the son of God, suffered and died to pay the penalty we each owe to God for our rebellion against him. Because of this, we who ask God to forgive us through Jesus, and then aim to follow His leadership, have all our sins and transgressions forgiven, and will be with him now and forever. Are you doing this?

Mark 15:33 “At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” … With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes [trusts] in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Good to remember that Saint Patrick’s Day is really all about the Good News of Jesus and the Word of God.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! Patrick, originally from Britain, is honored today because he spent most of his life in Ireland to share the good news of Jesus with those who worshipped many gods and goddesses and had never heard of the one true and living God. Thousands of people, including some government leaders, came to faith in Christ. According to some stories, he used a three-leaf shamrock to explain the triune nature of God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—to the Irish. ☘️ Patrick wrote, “Never before did they know of God except to serve idols and unclean things. But now, they have become the people of the Lord and are called children of God.”

You can read a short account of Patrick’s amazing life that he wrote himself at: https://www.confessio.ie/etexts/confessio_english

John 12:42-43 “Many even of the rulers believed in Him [Jesus], but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the glory of men rather than the glory of God.”

Sadly, this sounds similar to many I reach out to at the Capitol. They tell me privately that they believe in Jesus, but they will not let it be known publicly, such as by attending our weekly Capitol Bible Discussion Gatherings, because it might hurt their political career. As I’ve heard it, “people in my party wouldn’t understand,” or “I’d get push back from my caucus colleagues,” or “It just wouldn’t go over in my district,” or “My office colleagues wouldn’t like it.” Like the Pharisees of Jesus day, they seem to love the glory of men rather than the glory of God.

Lord help us to love you more than anyone or anything.

It was a blessing to visit with some of California's Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in their offices across the street from the U.S. Capitol building in Washington DC. I know them and many others personally because more than half of California's 54 U.S. Congress Members used to serve in our State Capitol prior to being elected to U.S. Congress, as is common in states across the U.S.. As we reach out to help or pray for those in our state capitols, we are also helping our future national leaders.
