Alexander Carpenter, editor of SPECTRUM, and Bjorn Karlman, editor of Adventist Today, are in Papua New Guinea seeking to understand what Adventism looks like in one of the denomination’s fastest-growing regions.

In this first dispatch, they attend the country’s largest Adventist church, share a Sabbath with Prime Minister James Marape, and begin exploring the complex relationship between faith, culture, and explosive church growth.

Thanks to a grant from the Journalism for Adventist Solutions Foundation SPECTRUM executive director Alexander Carpenter is traveling and working with Bjorn Karlman, executive director of Adventist Today to Papua New Guinea.

Recently, the Adventist Review has posted a few videos about their own trips to PNG. Most of their content focuses on “what we can learn” from the PNG eyepoping evangelistic success. But what does spiritual success mean and what responsibilities accompany church growth?

Together, Carpenter and Karlman will explore the story of the more than 250,000 adults who were baptized around May 2024 during “PNG for Christ.”

The end of the “Ezequiel Law” in Latin America opens the door for church leaders to publicly express their political and ideological preferences, creating a normative vacuum on public demonstrations.

Could this change reinforce existing ideological trends within Adventism in Brazil? How might this fuel an already existing political tendency among Adventists?
