With its brilliant red fall color and distinctive horizontal branching, the Black Gum is often considered one of Virginia’s most beautiful native trees. 🍂🌳Hollywood Cemetery is home to a particularly remarkable Black Gum, so notable that it was featured in Remarkable Trees of Virginia, published in 2008.

On April 27, 1870, Richmond was waiting for a decision that would determine who would lead the city.

A bitter dispute had left George Chahoon and Henry Ellyson both claiming the mayor’s office.

That morning, the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals was set to rule on the matter, drawing politicians, lawyers, reporters, police officers, and citizens to the Capitol.

Among them was William Charters, Chief of the Richmond Fire Department.

Concerned about the size of the crowd, Charters was reportedly standing near the front of the courtroom, counting those in attendance and considering how they might be evacuated in the event of a fire.

At around eleven, a loud crack rang out as the gallery floor collapsed.

People and debris were sent crashing into the House of Delegates chamber below.

Charters was among the 62 people killed in what became known as the Capitol Disaster.

Today, his monument at Hollywood Cemetery honors his life, service, and dedication to Richmond.

The Eastern Phoebe is a small bird, about 7 inches long, but its distinctive “fee-bee” call often gives it away near water. Look for it perched on low branches as it searches for insects.
