Historical Hymn Notes

Hymn 574 — “Shepherd, show me how to go”

Mary Baker Eddy’s poem “‘Feed My Sheep’” was first published in The Christian Science Journal in March 1887 and appeared in the first official Christian Science Hymnal in 1892.

Hymn 574 pairs this historic prayer with SASHA, a contemporary tune by British composer Andrew D. Brewis. Published in the 2017 hymnal, the setting gives fresh musical expression to Eddy’s timeless message: listen for the Shepherd’s voice, follow divine guidance, feed spiritual hunger, and heal the heart.

The Shepherd’s Watch

Welcome to *The Shepherd’s Watch*, our almost-weekly note sharing testimony highlights, stories behind the hymns we sing, and opportunities for worship and study. Members prepare this newsletter as volunteers, so we may miss a week here and there.
From Wednesday’s testimony meeting

Yielding to Divine Direction.

This week’s readings explored **yielding human will and personal beliefs to the Divine Mind**. Passages called for putting off the “old man” and willingly turning to God. Jonah’s experience illustrated the blessing of surrendering resistance to divine direction, while Christ Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane—“Not as I will, but as thou wilt”—expressed trust and obedience. Correlative passages from *Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures* by Mary Baker Eddy emphasized healing as mortal sense yields to spiritual sense and thought becomes receptive to the government of divine Principle and the ever-present power of divine Love.

Testimonial Summary
One speaker shared how prayer helped her face anxiety over repeated unauthorized debit-card charges. Encouraged by the Lesson-Sermon “Reality,” she turned to God for guidance and received helpful assistance at her bank in making new account arrangements. When the card change interrupted payment for her digital Bible Lesson subscriptions, contact with the Christian Science Publishing Society and a temporary debit card helped her maintain access. She expressed gratitude for daily trust in God and the understanding that divine Principle governs and sustains harmony.

A second speaker described her own “Jonah story” while returning to Charlotte on an earlier standby flight. She was grateful for a timely hotel shuttle, the quick recovery of a misplaced phone, and a seat on the flight. As the plane prepared for takeoff, she prayed for the pilots and everyone aboard; shortly afterward, the pilot stopped the departure to address a faulty sensor reading. The issue was resolved, and the flight arrived safely. She expressed gratitude for God’s constant presence and opportunities to pray for fellow travelers and the world.
