Sermon preview:
How do you shape the identity of a group? In high school, it includes matching uniforms for sports and the band. Pretty simple.
But in the church, shaping the identity of God’s people is a little more complicated than the choir wearing matching robes (though that is visually pleasing!).
God uses the rituals of worship to shape the identity of God’s people: we gather, we confess, we sing, we pray, we break bread and share the cup.
And Matthew 18, a chapter we often associate with conflict resolution, has another ritual to shape our identity as Christians – the ritual of listening. It promises that when two or three are gathered to do the painful work of reconciliation, Jesus is present.
