St. John’s leads in the community! We celebrate the work of the I.L.A. Ladies Auxiliary. Many of our members are part of this organization, including its president, Sis. Krystal Jones-Dent. We celebrate our members’ service and leadership in the community!

St. John’s is proud to share news from across the connectional AME Church. Our Global Impact Fund supports the liberation and development of people around the world — this is one example of that work in action!

Edward Waters University is proving that HBCUs are not just surviving—they’re growing.

Florida’s first HBCU welcomed 1,281 students for Fall 2026, its highest fall enrollment in more than two decades, after receiving over 13,000 applications. The Jacksonville university added 674 new students, while transfer enrollment jumped nearly 35 percent.

Since 2019, EWU’s enrollment has climbed more than 37 percent, its endowment has grown from $2.8 million to $8.6 million and the university has posted six consecutive operating surpluses.

Founded in 1866 by and for formerly enslaved people, Edward Waters is now only 39 students away from its all-time enrollment record. That’s legacy meeting momentum.

The historic campus of St. John’s African Methodist Episcopal Church in Norfolk, Virginia! Established in 1840, our church has proudly called Bute Street home since 1848. Over the decades, our campus has grown to reflect both our rich history and our ongoing commitment to our community: ⛪ The Sanctuary: Our beautiful current church building was constructed in 1888.🏡 The Parsonage: Built in 1908, this landmark structure was designed by the legendary J. A. Lankford, one of the nation’s foremost pioneering Black architects.🏫 The Education amCenter: Added in 1988 to expand our reach, learning, and fellowship. As we begin the vital work of restoring our historic sanctuary, the campus remains open! Today, this campus continues to stand as a vibrant place of worship and a bustling community hub. TOMORROW: We’re launching the 1816 Fellowship — a new college campus ministry for students across the 757, in partnership with other local AME churches!

We’re excited to have Rev. Tashara S Void, who will be leading this ministry to help college students grow spiritually and connect socially during their years away from home.

This is the start of a community built on intentional and impactful worship, fellowship, prayer, Bible study, and real support for AME (and other) students on campuses throughout Hampton Roads.
