Thank you to those volunteers who served on the short-term response in Ashe County, NC in April who arrived to find the foundation and began building from the floor joists up. WNCC UMC Disaster Response we are grateful and blessed to have been a small part of this new start for this family. Welcome home Woodall family!

Last week Brethren Disaster Ministries held a conference for Rebuilding Program disaster project leaders (DPLs) in Black Mountain, N.C. Participants included 23 DPLs, four staff, and four former/future partners. What a fantastic experience it was!

The opportunity to get to know each other better; introduce Jeff Thomson as the new BDM director; share thoughts, ideas, praises, and concerns; hear from our partners; and, importantly, brainstorm ways to live into our new strategic plan, was invaluable. We also played games, climbed mountains, and took time to chat. Special thanks to Ed Olkowski, who developed a hilarious game of Jeopardy: BDM edition!

Our time together reinforced how precious our community is and how each one is an important part of our ministry.

Celebrate with us the continuing recovery work of our former partner H.O.M.E.S. Inc. as the 4-year anniversary date of the devastating flooding event is upon us. What a blessing they have been to their communities and so many people!

Denny Skeweris, District Disaster Coordinator for West Marva District Church of the Brethren and his wife Anna delivered 350 clean up buckets, gloves, masks and other supplies to Buckhannon, WV yesterday in response to the flooding event that occurred there this week. They will be delivering 241 more buckets along with other supplies today, and then some more supplies tomorrow. Thank you, Denny, for coordinating this local district response with the West Virginia VOAD!

You still have time to join the ANNUAL CONFERENCE VIRTUAL BLOOD DRIVE (including blood, plasma, or platelets) - it ends July 31. The American Red Cross reports a current shortage, particularly of platelets.

The Lititz Church of the Brethren held a blood drive on July 17 and collected 56 units of blood, which will save up to 168 people. Twelve of those donors signed up as part of the Virtual Blood Drive, bringing our total so far to 24 units of blood and 1 unit of platelets.

Have you donated blood, plasma, or platelets between June 1 and July 31? If so, let us know about it! If you haven't, please consider how you can save lives by doing so. Contact your local blood donation agency for an appointment.

We received this powerful and humbling framed letter today from our long-term partner in Letcher County, Kentucky, H.O.M.E.S. Inc. We partnered with them for just shy of 2 years in response to the destructive 2022 flooding event.

HOMES Inc. we will be forever grateful for our partnership with you! Your creative and innovative approach to affordable housing solutions for disaster survivors is inspiring. We are humbled by your recognition of our model of long-term disaster recovery and that our leadership, volunteers, and mission represent the highest ideals of compassionate service. You are the best!

VENEZUELA EARTHQUAKE UPDATE-
Responding in Partnership with the Church of the Brethren in Venezuela

Brethren Disaster Ministries and the Church of the Brethren Global Mission office are in ongoing discussions with the leadership of the Church of the Brethren in Venezuela (ASIGLEH) regarding a larger response to the country’s earthquakes that hit a little over three weeks ago. ASIGLEH has already received Emergency Disaster Fund (EDF) grants totaling $10,000 to support immediate relief efforts in La Guaira, which suffered some of the heaviest damage.

Those wishing to support the Church of the Brethren response to the earthquakes are encouraged to donate through the Emergency Disaster Fund to the Earthquake Response at https://www.brethren.org/giveEDF-earthquake.

Background information: On June 24, 2026, twin earthquakes rocked the northwest coast of Venezuela, near Caracas. The two quakes, 7.2 and 7.5 magnitudes, struck just 39 seconds apart and caused significant damage in Caracas, as well as La Guaira, Yaracuy, Carabobo, Aragua, Miranda, and Cojedes. The confirmed death toll is still rising and is just under 5,000, with nearly 17,000 injured, and the UN estimates as many as 50,000 people may be missing. Tens of thousands are displaced with over 21,000 living in shelters.
