There is a lot of quiet at Abide Week, but quiet is not the goal.

It makes room to notice what is already true: Christ is with us, and he is worth attending to. The group in Monticello is practicing that this week through Scripture, prayer, walking, and honest conversation.

The next Abide Week is in Syracuse, September 27 to October 2 at Quaker Haven Camp. Registration closes September 13. Link in bio.

Last night, we welcomed attendees to the first of our two fall Abide Weeks at Allerton Retreat Center. The group opened with a slow walk through Luke 24, the road to Emmaus. For the next five days, we will learn together what it means to be with Jesus. Would you pray with us, brothers and sisters?

Here is a thought for the person who tends to organize things.

What each person builds at Abide Week is meant to be lived at home. It often carries better when two or three people from the same church were there together. You come home with shared language and someone who can ask in October how the practices are going.

Think about the people you already do life with. A couple of friends. Others from your church. You might be the one to start the group chat.

Syracuse, IN: September 27 to October 2 at Quaker Haven Camp. Registration closes September 13. Details at the link in bio.

Coming on your own? You are welcome too. The week creates its own community.

Someone who came this spring wrote one sentence that has stuck with us: “You cannot love what you do not attend to.”

Most of us do not need to be convinced that God matters. The harder question is what receives our attention through an ordinary day.

Attention can be trained. We can learn to return to Scripture, to prayer, and to the God who is already with us, even when the mind wanders. That is one part of what we practice at Abide Week.

Abide Week at Quaker Haven is September 27 to October 2. The shape is the same: Scripture, guided prayer, stillness, reflection, and honest conversation, with time to build a simple pattern for life with God at home.

Quaker Haven asks for updated meal counts two weeks before the week begins, so registration closes Sunday, September 13. If Syracuse is your week, details and registration are at the link in bio.

The point of the week is Jesus.

The quiet, the Scripture, the walks, and the conversations are not ends in themselves. They help us notice the One who is already with us and learn to remain in him when life speeds up again.

I think this is one of the most important parts of Abide Week: we do not assume six good days will carry themselves into the next six months.

On the final day, each person works through a simple pattern for life with God at home. The aim is not an ideal schedule or a list designed to impress. It is a few practices that fit the responsibilities and limits of the life you actually have.

The week matters. What you carry into an ordinary morning back home matters more.

Let's be honest about what a week can and can't do.

Six days away won't do our discipleship for us. It won't remove every distraction or make faithfulness easy once we're home. Anyone promising that is selling something.

What it can do is give us room to see clearly. Enough quiet to notice how our lives are actually shaping us, and enough honesty with a few others to choose spiritual practices we can really keep.

Deep change is slow. A week doesn't replace the years. But it can start them well.

Someone who came this spring said one surprise was how quickly the group came together: “I felt so comfortable and loved by this group of people.”

Walking into a room where you know almost no one can feel awkward. Abide Week is built around shared meals, table conversations, walks, and stories. You do not have to manufacture closeness. You simply show up, and over the week people begin to know each other.

People ask what we actually do for six days. Easier to show you.

There's teaching, but just as much practice: reading slowly, sitting quietly, walking and praying, telling our stories to a few trusted people. Good meals. Real conversation. Evenings end in quiet.

Nobody needs experience with any of it. We walk through everything together.
