UMC Bishops Express Deep Concern Over Supreme Court Voting Rights Decision

5/19/2026 - Ministries
Council of Bishops
The United Methodist Church
Press Release
For Immediate Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Council of Bishops of The United Methodist Church is acutely aware of, and deeply concerned about, the recent decision of the U.S. Supreme Court to deny protection to Section Two of the Voting Rights Act.

We stand in prayerful solidarity with the statements and leadership offered by the General Board of Church and Society and by Bishop Jonathan Holston.

This decision carries grave implications for the protection of voting rights and the full political voice of Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities across parts of the United States.

We are grateful for the clear, thorough, and urgent witness offered by Church and Society in their recent article, “U.S. Supreme Court Denies Protection of Section Two of the Voting Rights Act,” and for North Alabama Conference Bishop Jonathan Holston’s pastoral message, “Civic Engagement and Voting.”

We encourage pastors, congregations, and leaders to:
Read the Church and Society article: US Supreme Court Denies Rights of Section Two of Voting Rights Act
Read the Message from Bishop Holston: Civic Engagement and Voting
Pray for all whose votes and voices are at risk of being diminished.
Discern how you and your congregation can raise awareness, stand with affected communities, and advocate for just and fair access to the ballot.
As a worldwide church, we affirm that the right to participate fully and fairly in public life is a matter of Christian conscience and a sign of love of neighbor.

We give thanks for the ongoing witness of our episcopal leaders and for the ministry of our general agencies who guide the church in policy analysis, advocacy, and the strengthening of our social witness.

We join them in calling the people of The United Methodist Church to hopeful, courageous engagement and leadership.

Walking with you in Christ’s mission,

Bishop Ruben Saenz Jr.
President, Council of Bishops
The United Methodist Church
