October is often thought of as the traditional “stewardship season” in the church. This is the time of year when many churches hold campaigns, preach a sermon series about generosity, and distribute pledge cards in the hope that most of them will eventually find their way back.

Of course, that calendar does not work for every congregation. Churches with seasonal attendance patterns—especially those welcoming snowbirds—may choose a different time of year. Others may not conduct a formal campaign at all.

Recently, the Florida United Methodist Foundation had the privilege of being present with the United Methodist Church of Sun City Center for a joyful milestone in the life of the congregation. The Rev. Ed New, the Foundation’s President and CEO, was invited to join the festivities and celebrate with the congregation as they marked the payoff of a loan made by the Foundation to help construct the church’s LEC building.

The Florida United Methodist Foundation’s recent R-10 event welcomed its largest crowd in a decade, bringing together clergy and spouses within approximately ten years of retirement for two days of learning, encouragement, and preparation.

Held September 21–22, the gathering covered Medicare, Social Security, Wespath retirement benefits, staying healthy, taxes, long-term care insurance, and many other topics. Participants had an opportunity to consider the decisions ahead and how thoughtful planning today can support a fulfilling retirement.
