October's Greek word 🌱
Our prayer theme for this month has been “Bold Honesty.” Kathy challenged us in her post to come to the Lord with all of ourselves: including our questions, doubt, and anger. Are we willing to be boldly, brutally, and beautifully honest with the Lord in all of life’s seasons? Do we acknowledge what is happening in our hearts or do we try to shove it down and act like everything is fine? The author of Hebrews encourages us to step BOLDLY to the throne of grace and even gives us an indication exactly when to have the courage to be bold: when we need Jesus’ help the most! The writer gives us an absolute truth- that we WILL find mercy and grace to help us when we come boldly.
What is boldness? In Greek, the word bold in this verse is translated “parresia.” It means frank, blunt, plainly, and confidently. It has a very real and raw understanding. It is a picture of someone allowing God to see ALL of their emotion and thought without reservation or hesitation, knowing that He wants to listen, hold space for, and carry it all. As we share with God in this manner, He will heap onto us His glorious mercy and grace and it is in this beautiful exchange that we experience the exact help we need! Praise God!
When understanding boldness this way, we can now understand Hebrews 4:16 this way:
“So let me step to the throne of grace confidently. I will be blunt and frank with the Lord about how I am feeling and thinking. I will speak plainly about it, not trying to cover up my experiences to make myself seem better. When I do this, He promises me that I will find His mercy and grace and will experience His glorious help!”
I pray each of us have the courage to approach our Lord Jesus boldly so that we experience the fullness of His mercy and grace!
