It’s one of the oldest stumbling blocks in Christian faith. The Trinity sounds like a math problem that doesn’t add up. But what if it’s not a math problem at all? What if it’s an invitation? We’ve turned Thomas into a cautionary proverb—“don’t be a doubting Thomas”—as if he got faith wrong, and I want to apologize to him. When you look at the text, the other disciples are locked in a room out of fear, and Thomas is the only one brave enough to leave, so he misses Christ’s visit not because he’s faithless, but because he’s doing what the rest of them wouldn’t do.
