Dear Church Family,

I’m on the first leg of this journey to Cuba and have Wi-Fi for a few minutes, so I wanted to send a quick note.

At 3:30 this morning, as I rounded the first level of the parking garage, there was a single luggage cart near an open parking space. With two 70-pound bags full of medicines and water filters, plus my carry-ons, that cart was a gift!

This trip, I’m also carrying some of the funds you helped raise through Mardi Gras Madness. Because of your generosity, two of our water partners—Placetas Adventist Church and San Bernabé Episcopal Church—will soon have solar power.

In Cuba today, blackouts of 24, 36, or even 48 hours or longer are common. When electricity does return, it may only last an hour or two—sometimes in the middle of the night. One operator at Placetas rushes to the church whenever the power comes on, even at 3 a.m., so he can produce clean water for his community. And when the electricity doesn’t come, he sends a message through the neighborhood: “If someone can find a liter of gas, we can all have clean water today.” Someone always shows up with that precious fuel ($40 a gallon, if you can find it), and clean water begins to flow. Two miracles: a liter of gas followed by gallons of safe water.

Our church partners do more than provide clean drinking water. They also feed people. Whatever they have—a little bread, some coffee (always very strong and super sweet), beans and rice—they share. The solar systems you funded will help them continue serving both water and food, while also providing light, fans, and a welcoming place for worship, Bible studies, prayer gatherings, recovery meetings, and youth activities.

I share all of this because our water team wants to thank you.

Thank you for opening your hearts to sisters and brothers you may never meet. Thank you for helping provide clean water, food, and hope. Thank you for helping these churches be the church God calls them to be in their communities—a church always reaching out beyond their four walls. A beacon of hope in the midst of too much darkness

One of our partners recently said, “We are witnessing a miracle—a whole troop of angels has shown up to help us.”

Those angels are you.

I’ll send updates when I can, though electricity and connectivity will be limited during this visit. Thank you for your prayers and for the many ways you continue to share God’s love with our friends in Cuba.

Lunch will be served starting at 11:30 followed by music and a meditation. Our Presbyterian Women are providing the delicious meal. Plates are $10 with all proceeds going to our local Boys & Girls Club. Come and bring a friend!
